I have headers and a manual choke on a 2 bbl carb. When it gets cold, my truck starts right up but won't keep running unattended (I like to get the heater going while I sip on a cup of joe). Anyhow, I guess the problem is that I don't have a stove to heat the air to the carb in that I have headers. Is there some kind of adapter for this? Thanks.
I've seen something like what you're after. Try this: 720-3665 Choke Stove I found it in the Jegs website. If that doesn't work, just build what you're after.
Hey JohnOR - nice stock 250. Can't say I ever experienced exact same problem and have had headers for 10 yrs, but you don't say why you are hanging on to manual choke and what size carb you have. An electric choke isn't a bad thing, it means you can leave it running for awhile without staying in it to keep adjusting.
I'm running a 2bbl Holley and I'm starting to think the problem must be the carb. I mean, it should keep running with the choke set right. Anyhow, I'm what you might call a half *** purist. That is, I sorta kinda try to keep the truck sorta kinda original. Of course, it has a manual choke so there you go. However, you do make a good point about an automatic choke and Jason's idea on the jeg part sounds attractive. It's an F-100 btw, Trev.
jor
jor, has it always done this or did it just start?
I can appreciate keeping it stock in that manner, ya got the manual choke **** so why not use it?
Does it just cut out or does it chug and die (with black smoke). Have you tried adjusting it? The fast idle screw sets the relationship between the throttle plate position and the choke plate. Maybe try adjusting it if you haven't already.
It's always done it, just when it's cold. If I take right off and play with the choke a little as I drive, it will warm up on no time and all is well. Come to think of it though, my other 67 (should have never sold that great old truck) didn't have this problem. I've only done the low speed adjustments. I'll try the high speed although I'm not really sure how to proceed. How does one do the high speed adjustment? Thanks.
The fast idle spec. is 2500 rpm. Here's how you set it. Make sure the engine is warmed up thoroughly. Pull the choke cable out all the way so the carb. is in the full choke position. Now start the engine, you will have to somehow hold open the choke plate on top. Turn the fast idle screw in until you get 2500 rpm. That's it, but I personally run it a little less cause it seems like it's racing to me. You can play with the adjustment till you get it where you like.
