Exhaust Leak:

Another question for everyone and another round of thanks to all the help and input I have recieved.I have a leak coming from the front cat coming off the manifold and when I start it up when cold out I see smoke coming from thefront of cat and the rear of cat and it is a little noisy and was wondering how to fix or if I should remove cat and run a piece of pipe.Looks like I would have to remove cat anyway to see what is leaking, should I just scrap convertor or any suggestions? Would it run any differently or be louder with cat removed? What would be best way to remove, Sawzall?

So it's leaking around the catalytic converter? Around the flanges to the rest of the exhaust, or right around the converter? Around the Flanges, you probably just need a new donut to seal it up. Around the converter would indicate a hole in the converter, indicating replacement of that part, or at least a repair. Never heard of a converter getting a hole in it, and I’m not sure you could weld up the hole without damaging the part.

As far as just eliminating the converter all together, I don’t think that’s too wise. My ’95 has an 02 sensor after the converter. If you eliminate the converter, chances are your truck will throw a code, the CEL will come one, and the truck won’t run normally. There are plug-in O2 sensor eliminators, but I have heard that they only work for a certain amount of time, and then the CEL comes on anyway.

Okay Tiggie,I will try to answer your question from memory because my father in law is borrowing my truck and I cant run outside and check, so please bear with me.The pipe comes down off the manifold and meets the front of the convertor. The pipe going into the convertor is of smaller diameter and meets a flared opening to convertor,I believe.Same way on the back of convertor, a flare meeting a smaller diameter pipe.Is that a flange and if so how to replace gaskets? It may be larger pipe to smaller convertor flare, but either way I do know that where they meet there is a flare of some sort.Hope I didnt confuse anyone.....

So it's leaking after the converter where the larger pipe coming out of the converter meets with the smaller pipe to the rest of the exhaust system? Mine has two bolts and nuts holding the two sections together, with the donut (seal) between then to seal things up. Go to the auto parts store and they should be able to get you the donut you need.

Thanks again Tiggie, but hear this. I got my truck back and looked again and this is what I see. A little smoke is coming out of each end of the cat, from between the heat shield. Also is where noise is coming from. So with the heat shield on I cannot tell what is leaking internally. It is the front cat, oval shaped and about 18-22 inches long. Can I remove heat shield to inspect leak or replace with new unit?

I believe you can remove the heat shield, but I think it must be welded back on. If you know the leak is coming from under the heat shield, the converter must have a hole in it. I think I would replace it.

Thanks Tiggie and sorry for the confusion. I was going on memory and not real sure of any factual info. Yes, it is coming from within the heat sheild, smoking out of both ends and can be loud especially when accelerating. A friend of mine suggested just cutting cat off and replacing with straight pipe, and although that would be the cheapest route, I am concerned with what you mentioned in an earlier post about not running right. A new front cat is about $40 but how do you install, weld on or clamps?

I always like to weld my exhaust, but clamps would suffice.

Well being a welder by trade I guess I can do that. I will probably do it at my work. Thanks again for the help. Now if only only I can get some tips on this oil leak problem I have posted, I will be all set until I can think of something else that needs attention...
