I've got an '87 F-150, 302, headers, dual exhaust. I'm going to put a new cat on and have a quick question (I presently have no cat, it was removed last year). The cat is a dual-in, dual-out with an O2 bung built in. The cat is one unit, meaning both inlets dump into the same space in the cat. With this set-up, do I still need the H-pipe (with the O2 sensor) coming from the headers and in front of the cat, or can I just run the pipes from each header directly into the cat and run my O2 sensor from the cat. My guess is that the H-pipe is now unnecessary, since the exhaust from each side of the engine will equalize inside the cat. Any thoughts. Anyone, anyone, Bueler, Bueler? Thanks in advance. Oh, one other question, should I get a new O2 sensor since I am putting on a new cat?
Unless something like an O2 sensor is in the H-pipe, it'd be fine to replace it with the cat. The big thing is to make sure if you had like a single O2 before and a single O2 after that you maintain that setup.
Yes I would reccommend replacing the O2 since you'll be down there anyways.
FWIW, I put on my 2-in, 2-out cat the other day and the truck runs GREAT. I thought it ran nice before, but apparently the additional back-pressure added just enough umph to really smooth it out. I suspect that the construction of the thing accomplishes the same thing an X-pipe does so I'm getting a much better mixture of the exhaust from the left and right banks before exiting through the mufflers. Anyway, that's my experience with this thing and so far, I'm quite pleased. New Flowmasters are next.
