Stuck! once again.....

So I get everything together in the garage last night, set my alarm for early, and start on my bearclaw door latch install. Well needless to say, Im stuck in fabrication mode again, and I am not enjoying it one bit. I got the latches installed in the doors, and they look and work great, but Ive a couple of problems.

The door latch assembly inside the door seems to be getting caught up with my window assembly, its not rolling down smoothly at all, easy enough. Now for the frustrating part. My doors close fine, but the locking post placement is so close to the edge of the door pillar, that its not going to work. I see my only other option is to move the bearclaw assembly further back in the door, but that will REALLY make me unable to roll down my window.

Im venting and done for the night. My garage is thrashed, and Im pooped. I give props to you fabrication guys, this stuff is VERY hard to get right.

suggestions?

Rich

You live in San Diego, what do you need side windows for?

Hey it does rain once in a while here. But Rich can't roll them down all the way not fun when it's warm. Rich I feel your pain and wish you the best. I'm in the middle of the cut, chop, rebuild, on my rear end. Swapping axles, narrowing, flipping, C notching, and maybe bagging. Good luck, Rich in the Cajon zone.

John Niolon did a tech article about installing the bear claw latches in his truck. Maybe he has some insight into your problems.

Actually this is just my ploy to learn from other peoples problems. I am planning to install bear claw latches in my '53 tonight

I guess you guys didn't know, but these things were originally marketed as bear JAWS, I guess because of their clamping ability (?) a little more logical if you think about it. Anyway, back to the question, I have addressed this problem in the past by placing the latch in the jamb and the post on the door, of course this is only practical if you are using electric release mechs but it is a good solution. Has anyone ever seen a latch at the bottom of the door and another at the top with a common release mechanism? It's a thought I had about trying to clean up the jamb.

Rich,
I feel your pain, but you know you'll work it out. The next time you go out and look at it, you may see a whole new solution. I wish I had better advice and a solution for ya. But I haven't started my latches yet. ( very soon)
good luck
Mike

Heh, Well I guess I get to figure it out. Mr. Niolion's article is not completed. There are more variables to be considered when trying to get proper placement for your latches. Im mentally challenged when it comes to some of this stuff.

Are you installing your latch on the inside or outside of the door? I installed my Bear Claw latches on the outside of the door, I have a pic. in my gallery.

Did you not butt them up to the back edge of the door? I would have thought there would be plenty of clearance for the window there? I have my electric window motor and lock solenoid in there without any interference.

I'm thinking some PICs would be good. I removed my bearclaws, but there was plenty of room in there for everything. I'm unsure what you are having a problem with?
