Hey all, kinda new to the board and the trucks. Just bought a '76 4x4 with power steering and a 360 (was supposed to be a 390! ). Hard to keep on the road right now due to worn out steering components. Plan to replace track bar bushing with a poly type and since the rag joint and u-joints on the steering shaft are worn slap out, I was thinking of buying the borgeson shaft from summit. My questions to yall are: is it worth $219, will it fit my ride, and does the steering wheel shimmy more without the rag joint? Also I might put a body lift on in the future, will this shaft still work then?
PS this is a great site, I've learned a lot already!!!
The rag joint is a vibration isolator that helps prevent the road vibration from transmitting thru the steering wheel into your hands. This is not a problem for short trips but with longer trips you can end up with numb hands and fingers etc. Many times the cab mounts are bad also which also transmit vibration into the cab. You will need a longer shaft for your body lift.
I have a borgeson on my truck and have had trouble with the allen screw and lock nut that hold the shaft to the column backing off. Even with threadlock. Needless to say, that is a bad situation waiting to happen. Flaming River makes shafts for your truck also. No experience with them.
I have a Borgeson on my truck. I installed it about 5 months ago with no issues. Its a quality item. You can contact them directly and ask questions, may be able to save a few $$. Mike
I bought a Borgeson steering column u-joint to replace the one on my 1978 F150 4x4. It has been two years with absolutely no issues. It made quite a difference in the handling and I would recommend it to anyone. The u-joint was only $70 or $80 or so...I didn't buy the whole steering shaft/column. You can cut the old u-joint off the factory shaft and replace with the new one.
I installed a Borgeson steering shaft with vibration isolator in my 77 and I agree with roscoe, I have had it installed for 2 years with zero trouble and it makes driving long trips much more comfortable. A bit expensive, but worth the money in my opinion. These shafts will need to be cut to correct length for your truck, so do not cut too short when first installed and it should fit when you lift it. -Ed
Thanks for the replys. I ordered the shaft and bushings from Summit so thats that. I surely could have gone a cheaper route, but I really wanted to get rid of the rag joint. So I bought the shaft with the vibration isolator. Hopefully this will hold up better. I'll post any unexpected problems, if there are any.
