If you have a friendly Ford counter man, with a little time to spare, he can look up parts for you using enginering or casting numbers. It can take him awhile though.
I did this once to help a guy on this forum looking for a part number for his hood ornament with three lions on it, to see if it was factory or added on later.
The casting number brought up about 10 different hood ornaments ranging from the Explorer over world 1975 hood ornament to a 1981 Explorer black hood ornament, to a universal hood ornament for the 1973 1979s. All those parts share the same casting part number.
You then have to cross reference those 10 hood ornament part numbers, to get the part number you need, or the part you want.
As I said not all parts men would take the time, but they can do this.
In some instances however a casting or engineering number may bring up 1000 or so parts, fitting several different vehicles. and a parts man may not deal with that too kindly.
Still with the hood ornament, didn't figure out what trim line it belonged to, but we did find out it was made for his truck. Probably an option extra etc...
just got back from the yard again, told him my problem, pulled out a wad of cash and gave me the money back. he said i aint sure if i have one i dont think i do but you can go up the hill behind that bus and look. i went up there and there were stacks of manifolds so i started diggin. after about 10 mins i came out with one. same exact casting number. one of the stud holes needs to be drilled and tapped bout other than that it is good. went back down there handed him back the money he gave me earlier and walked out.
