Hey zman, jack up the front of your truck, remove the front wheels, lower the truck onto jackstands on their lowest setting. Get rid of the milk crate.
I remove the front wheels, an just set the front end on the ground gently. It will rest on the ball joints without damaging anything. If you are in the grass, i would set a pieace of wood under the ball joint nut to rest on.
Got to hand it to everyone! Dead on with the diagnosis of the P0401. Had been driving around with this code for awhile. Finally got around to trying to fix. Replaced the EGR first as I have a 97 F150 with 175k and figured it was about time. Did not solve the problem so I came here looking for other possible causes. Pulled the throttle body and elbow off as a unit, flipped it over and........ completly plugged ports. In fact looked like snake fangs, as the carbon build up was about an inch long and about the thickness of a straw from each port. Cleaned out the ports, reassembled, cleared the codes, drove about 30 miles, and no more check engine!
The whole project took about 40 minutes! Kudos to all!!
I haven't been able to get the last bolt out of the elbow where it connects to the intake manifold. It is an 8mm bolt and is fairly well back under the the firewall. I tried using a universal on my socket wrench but it was too tall. How did ya'll get this bolt out?
I would like to bring this topic back up If everyone does not mind ... I have the 5.4 in a 98 E150 Club Wagon ..... 125K and a 401 code. I do not have a shop manual yet do I get at the EGR valve from the front or the rear on a van ?
I probably better check the Throttle body ports as well ... right ?
Does any van owners have any tricks they used for access these two areas ?
This is the fail condition from my yearly inspection (no check engine lights) on my '01 Escape 6cyl 4x4 that had been sitting in a garage for 3 yrs. Almost new with 23000 mi on it. Could carbon build up be the problem here too? Should I follow the procedure for clearing the TB and ports explained here?
Thanks,
Rob

With the engine idling apply vacuum to the EGR valve. If the engine stalls or almost stalls then the EGR valve and ports are probably ok and the likely culprit is the DPFE.
I've replaced lots of them on Escapes.
Thanks for the prompt reply, RacerGuy. I applied vacuum to the EGR valve and the engine rough idled/almost stalled as you predicted. Will replace the DPFE ($27.99 at AutoZone) tomorrow if time allows. Bought and drove this vehicle from Portland, Or home to Houston, Tx (what a great drive). Too bad Texas registration requires I pay sales tax on this vehicle even though I bought it in Portland, Oregon. My intention was really to stay in Oregon.
Thanks for the assistance,
Rob
