i installed headers today and light came on. it was running fine until i installed em. i do have an exhaust leak i noticed. could that be the problem or should i try cleaning the egr??
I have the same problems on a 97 4.6 with 191k miles. Where is the egr and what does it look like? Exactly what hose do I pull of and apply a vaccum to while the truck is idling? How do I apply the vaccum, I assume I probably shouldn't suck on the hose.
it's on the side of the intake. It looks like a ufo, thats the best way i know how to explain it. With that many miles i would put good money on the ports being built up with carbon. I cleaned mine out when i had on 150K on my truck and the ports are about the size of the tip of my pinky finger. I could barely fit a paper clip in em. good luck
well i pulled off the plastic cover and removed the air intake from the throttle body to check it out. What would I do from there? Unbolt the throttle body and then the ports are right there? How do u clean them? How do you keep the carbon from ending up inside the engine or somewhere important?
I changed my oil/filter, and my airfilter and sprayed throttle body / air intake cleaner on the first 2 electrodes immediatley behind the filter. Cranked the truck up the check engine light turned off and the truck ran very smooth and great. But when coming to a stop the rpms dropped to 500 the truck never stalled jsut the rpms droppin real low? What do yall think?
Hey,
when you remove the the throttle body and elbow together and turn it upside down, you will see two holes in the wall of the elbow. With the throttle body, the part that the throttle cable hooks on to pointed away from you, and upside down. The ports will be next to your tummy. The holes or lack of, will be most likely full of carbon junk. If you soak the the elbow to clean the ports, remove the egr valve, and the throttle body. The egr valve should be removed anyway to clean the ports wellllllll. Good luck.
Ok, take the throttle body off, 4 bolts on it i think. Turn it upside down? and the holes are on the bottom of the throttle body? Are the holes on the throttle body or on the manifold?
Hello.
You have a throttle body, then a elbow thats between the throttle body and engine, intake. The elbow is about 5" wide by 8" long. It has the EGR bolted to it, the thing that is round, and has a tube that runs from the exhaust manifold to it, about 5/8 dia. with insulation on it sometimes. The elbow is the part with the port holes in it.
I wish i could put a picture up but i dont have a camera yet, and my daughters is hard at work.
I got looking at this yesterday, Its gonna be pretty easy to do. I will take the tb and intake off as once piece that was suggested. I figure only and hour or two of work. Thanks guys for all your help and will let you know how I made out.
How long are the egr ports that I need to clean? Any tips/tricks on cleaning them? Should I clean anything else in this system while I got parts off and im working on it? I plan on doing this sometime this sunday and I will letcha know how it turns out.
Wanted to update you guys. Took the TB off 4- bolts, had it off in about 5 min's. Holy Cow! The carbon build up was unbelievable! Plugged is an understatement. I guess with 217000 miles I'd be plugged too. Just wanted to thank you guys for your help. The truck is now ready for another 200000 miles.
Maybe i missed somethin on mine, but i pulled my TB off, 4 bolts 8mm. There was a ton of carbon on everything, i pulled out one hunk the size of a pingpong ball. But the TB isn't exactly what I need to take off is it? Is what I really need to take off, the elbow that the TB bolts to? That appeared to be where the EGR fed into. I only had about an hours time to do it. I knew the TB would come off in a couple of minutes, but I knew the other peice wouldn't be as quick in easy so I decided to save it for another day. But is that elbow that bolts to the intake the part that needs to be taken off and cleaned? or just the TB?
yes take the elbow off, all in one piece. Only took a couple of min's to do it. You have about 5 vac hoses, two electrical connections and unbolt the egr. take the 4 8mm bolts off the elbow and it comes right up. Very easy, took me about 40 min's for the whole project.
Im 6' even, my truck is 4x4 with the factory 265x70R17 (32" tires) and this is a pain in the butt standin on a milk crate leanin in there. Any tips or is yours a 2wd?
Sometimes I have been able to clean the ports with a piece of piano wire chucked up in a battery powered drill. Run the wire up and down and let it thrash around. Used a shop vac to suck out most of the crud.
