The three or four colored wires in the front of the divers side engine compartment are call "customer access wires" and DO NOT hook up to any thing. The other side of the wire in the cabin up and above the back side of the main fuse panel are also bare, same color. They are simply pass through wires that you can hook any 15 to 20 amp circuit to and not have to make your own new hole in the fire wall. Ford put these there so stupid owners would stop using a drill to make a hole and drill into the coolant lines, AC lines, other wiring harness and to prevent a path for exhaust, smoke or fire to get into the cabin.
The upfitter switches if installed are all 4 POWERED to provide two 10 amp and two 30 amp circuits. The ends of the hot wires are also up and behind the main fuse panel and all orange with colored stripes. They also have a 1 to 1.5 inch section of heatshrink insulation on the end of the wire so if you flip a switch up and make the wire HOT then it won't short to ground and cause a cabin fire.
There is enough slack in BOTH sets of wires that you the owner can connect a hot upfitter switch wire to one of the "pass through" wires and make the engine bay side hot to go to a set of fog lights, a relay for an aux cooler fan, a relay for a winch or any other 12vDC circuit you desire to control with a switch.
You can also attach one of the upfitter switches to one of the "Other" user access wires in the cabin to control the Stationary Elevated Idle Control (SEIC) circuit. When you add 12vDC to one of these SEIC wires and the park brake is on and the mph is zero the idle circuit will raise... actually it is more complicated and a series of resisters in another control box can be set up to increase the idle in steps for better motor RPM control for battery charging or PTO operation. But the poor mans raised idle method is good enough for many uses, like raising the rpm when trying to jump off a dead battery of another car or truck.
See the following links for 2005 and up info on upfitters switches and SEIC
Yes the upfitters switches, harness, and control box are retro fit-able to most 2001 to present SuperDuty trucks and Excursions.
