Im going to be getting a tune up done on my Navi in a couple of days, what spark plugs should I use ? Ive seen several different types from cheap $1.00 Champions all the way to $20 a piece Denso Iridiums, what should I get ?
they make lots of plugs that will "fit" but are not the correct plug. you need to use either autolite or motorcraft platinum plugs. the autolite should be about 2.69-3.99 each.
Made the mistake of using bosch plugs in a ford. The 5.4 spit them back at me in disgust. I apologized to my engine and then put the motorcraft super double platinum plugs in. Happy now.
I used NGK V-Power. Any plug that gets spit back at you is a problem with the head. Just search here for "Spark Plug Blow Out" and you will find pages of stuff. Turns out that FoMoCo decided that on the cylinder heads for the Triton engines, as few as 3 threads would be sufficient.
I do know that BOSCH plainum does not do well according to a lot of posts here.
You can buy those super duper plugs and pay $160.00 for a set of 8 but where is the pay off? The difference between a new Super-Duper Plug and a new Motorcraft Plug will yield enough gas mileage savings to pay off the $150.00 difference? I don't think it will even with $2.40 per gallon here in Atlanta.
Unless you have aftermarker performance parts (SC, Turbo, Nirtous) just use the MotorCraft. I happen to use the Densos, but I have a pretty good reason.
You know that the Mootrcraft plugs last 100,000 miles. Based on everyones' experience here, the price of Motorcraft plugs and the labor to change the plugs its the only plug that makes sense.
I would recommend using motorcraft only, we operate 4500 ford chassis with 5.4l and the v-10. Also make sure you do it when the engine is cold. Make sure you torque the plugs properly and not overtighten them, you don't want one stuck in your hood later on.....
just completed a spark plug and wire job on my '97 expo, 4.6L, wasn't as bad a job as it looked. Motorcraft plugs, the new fine wire plat's, 170,000 on the motor.
Truck was missing terrible, had a garage replace the plugs 30k ago, but it acted the same way so i figured i'd give it a try... Garage used Autolite PLugs, there was nothing left to them and 3 of them the ceramic insulators were burnt, High Voltage Arc marcks.
Runs better now, still a little fluctuation at idle .. Any sugestions, computer shows b1,s2 & b2,s2, o2 sensors bad yet....
