Rubiranch,I run the Petronix in My 71-300 six,72 390 and My 73 390 and have never had any problems .I have been using Petronix since 1998.

Yes i'm happy that I no longer run them after 2 failures, even a friend with his 57 Olds had a failure, they were the early production units. Only Crane XR 3000's under our hoods.

The key word "had", i'm still running a Allison which now is Crane since around 1980, no troubles.

I have had Pertronix in my '72 302 for the last 5 years...just works.

I love it! It works even with my worn cam lobes! It also passed emissions and ran 100% better.

I like the crane ignition... its pretty easy to put in... also has a rev limiter on it

Doesn't the Crane have a box that goes outside the distributor?

Yup, and has a shutter for the infrared light vs magnetic that can get false magnetic signals. I'll take a shutter that's 3 times larger than a cam lobe peak for a ignition signal. Like a comparison between FE rockers held against the stands by springs or solid aluminum spacers, I know what i would use.

Looks like both would be a good choice. I do like the Pertronix not having a "box" to mount outside of the distributor although I do understand the advantages of light vs magnetic pulse as far as accuracy goes.

Anything electronic is better than points. My biggest concern would be dependability because we are going to use the truck just for towing our travel trailer.

What does all that Crane stuff cost? The Pertronix was about $100 Cdn.
