I see you have a 72 F100, I have a red 69 F100 and a red 71 F350 dually. Plus afew other Fords and Mercurys including a 56 Mercury M100. Check out my gallery and the Man/Sask chapter when you get time.
How`s your weather? We are fairly cold at minus 25 yesterday morning and lots of snow, waiting for spring to get my fleet back on the road again.
"What does all that Crane stuff cost?"
When your dead along the side of the road with Pertronix's just think the money you saved, $80-$90 vs $135 hope the troubles worth your time or tow bills, been there done that twice with Pertronix's crap as well a friends Pertronox failure. Good thing I carried points, condenser and coil under the seat in a plastic box while running a Pertronix. This sounds like a Chebby / Ford thing, run what makes YOU happy.

I'm running the Pertonix ignition with a Flame Thrower coil, works fine, no problems. No noticeable improvement over the old points system though other than never having to change or adjust points again.
So I'm happy enough with it, not sure I'd bother again, but no complaints anyway.
my pertronix ignitor II burnt out & took my coil with it... or vice versa. i couldn't pin down the failure mode. when i looked at it, both the ignitor and the coil were inoperable. It was a Blaster II coil, the red one. went fine for a few hundred miles.
i replaced it with an old crane xr700 i've had for years. the crane has around 1/4 million miles on it. I have swapped it from car to car and have had to write Crane a couple of times for different shutter wheels, they are always cool! the pertronix is much easier to install, although the crane is still Simple to install. just not AS simple, lol.
the crane's turning out to be a real die hard. from the looks of most of these posts though, a lot of people find theirs to be reliable, so i don't want to knock them.
i did have a failure though and thought i would mention it.
lately i have been running the crane through an MSD 6a multi sparker, through a stock replacement coil (made in Mexico), it's rock solid from cranking rpm, up to top speed, and i like it a lot. not having to check the points again and again though is the greatest thing.
I have the Pertronix Ignitor I in both my 67 F100 and 67 mustang. No problems. However, I have heard of many problems with the Ignitor II hardware. There have been many discussions on this within the Vintage Mustang Forum (www.vintage-mustang.com). Most members there will tell you to go with the Ignitor I over the II.
i have used the pertronix ignitor I unit in over 24 trucks, cars, and farm tractors over the past 20 years. i never had a bad one, and every single one is still working today. my trick is that i use the stock coil, and do not bypass the ballast resister. the only thing i have found over the years, is after putting the pertronix in, i usually have to advance the timing around 6º over stock settings, and open the point gap to around .044.
With a stock coil and ballast resistor you just reduced primary coil voltage and current, most importantly secondary current, current equals heat.
Even without a ballast resistor their Pertronix coil has .6 ohm primary resistance, Cranes LX-91 inductive coil has .4 ohms or 1.5 times more current energy imput and a higher current secondary spark. Keeping the topic on induction not CD systems, but then your happy, that's all it counts and you eliminated points.

actually beemer, i only do the pertronix swap to get rid of the the points. i never consider it a performance upgrade. and you are rite, if you want a performance upgrade, there are much better ways to go. but for a simple get rid of the points plan, the pertronix ignitor I with everything else stock is a good way to go.
Many people install a points conversion like Pertronix for a install and forget system vs cleaning and adjusting points but forget to maintain proper centrifugal advance lubrication and function. If you don't have a smooth advance curve be it vacuum or mechanical no matter how hot of ignition the motor will run sub standard.
