It seems that there needs to be a truce here... Millions of cars ran on points driven by the average consumer with great results. YES tune ups were recommended at certain intervals. Some owners followed the recomendations and some did not even know ...AKA they just drive the cars.
Here again technology comes along!
some try the `New Thing` and some dont. One manufacture competes against the other for our business. are some things installed correctly or not mabe so!! is Customer service there.. Mabe so...
SO what is the "point" (sorry for the pun!)
Mabe something will come along in the future that we will need nither...
will we pay for it... probally so and have the same kind of thread here..
I just think that we all like what we are comfortable with and LIVE WITH IT
and cant get over the fact that no one else will listen..
qman, points don't go bad they just slowly deterioate from the moment they are put into service
Agree, and I don't think this is good. I'm pretty sure most people would consider an eletronic ignition to be an upgrade from points.

I've had that happen too and that is what I meant by "go bad"

Come on now, no need to be nice. I wouldn't say it cause I don't know it to be fact. It's just too bad you've had such bad experiences. My Pertronix unit has been flawless and the truck runs like a champ. The $60 for the unit and hour to install was well worth the time saved adjusting points every 6 months or so, or ever for that matter.

What does "let the smoke out" mean? I've never heard that before.
And Beemer, I wasn't trying to jump in your grill. I just couldn't grasp how you and jow started getting into it over this deal. But I just couldn't agree with you on the "points good, Pertronix bad" opinion. Have you ever tried one of the later Ford ignitions (MSD I think)? I've read a number of posts where folks have had great success with em.

No worries.
On MSD's ask Greg (GTEX) his opinions about MSD I won't to not get "jow" nickers in a bunch, i'll pass.
You ever plug something in and burn it up?
Notice after you let the smoke out it doesn't work any more.
i used pertronix for about 7 years then it gave up the ghost.the cost of a new pertronix was to much so i converted over to a duraspark setup, now it runs great an i have a 72 f-250 with 390 highboy
I've run the first generation with no problems for 5ys . The went to the ignitor II for a couple yrs. Now have moved on the ignitor III which did notice a difference. I have a MSD 6A box that i end up changing my mind on. I want reliably and always have a backup plan. But MSD Boxes and infrared pickup for disty our not cheap either for having a spare in the glove box. I carry just enough extra parts stuff to get me home or to a parts house or a repair shop. The killer of most high tech stuff is heat. And after living in the desert for 12yrs you learn a few things or two. As Msd boxes disty, Mallory our all known for racing. Just like Edelbrock heads put on and non-race. All great things if you naver leave town or go off in to the desert by yourself and and want to not walk out for help. But a cell phone do help. Points or a pertronix ignitor I & II our an ez fix. But if the msd box goes out or infrared pickups, those our not in every parts store.. I'll pass on the msd box & infrared disty pick up and or not cheap to have a spare..My 2cents
orich
My '72 390 used to eat point sets like crazy. After spending about $70 on a Pertronix kit, and 15 min of my time, I havent popped the dist cap in 10 yrs, and it passes smog test every time. Also have a hotter Accel coil with it.
they are now about $135 to replace . didnt have enough cash so i swapped to a duraspark set up $40 dist had wiring from another project plus already had the duraspark box so that was the best route for me an its been running great with no problems!!!!!
