I am new to this forum but can't wait to tackle some of the problems you guys have answered for me already. Thanks. I have searched the old postings for this one but couldn't find a match.
I have a 00 PSD that is giving me real trouble with the brakes....
-I purchased the truck in July with no problems. Around December this problem came up. When I step on the brake at speeds above 55 the pedal vibrated real bad. I kept driving figuring it was the rotors. About a week later I thought the dash was going to fall in my lap so I changed all 4 rotors. What a diffrence.
-2 weeks later I had the same problem. I changed the rear rotors, but it made no diffrence. I figured I must have overheated my front rotors so I had them turned at the machine shop. The truck drove great again.
-3 days later I have a new problem.... When I apply the brake at slower speeds now the truck lunges to a stop, in addition to the high speed vibration. It feels like all the tires are flat spotted. I am guessing the rotors are at fault again but how.....
-I have know problem buying slotted rotors and Hawk pads that you guys have suggested in the past but why am I warping rotors so fast.
****PLEASE HELP****
P.S. WHICH SLIDE PIN GOES ON TOP BRONZE OR SILVER
I drive about 1k miles per week. Changed the pads each time. The front end of the truck is tight except for some slight ball joint play on the drivers side. The tires are in good shape, they might be slightly chopped....but every time I change the rotors and nothing else it solves the problem.....for a few days
When you re-installed your wheels after changing your rotors, did you torque your wheels to 165 ft/lbs? For whatever reason, torque on the lug nuts is very critical on the Excursion for maintaining good run-out on your rotors. You may have a caliper sticking. When you re-assembled everything, did you put some type of lubricant on the caliper pins? When you apply the brakes, is the truck pulling to one side or the other? Just some ideas to toss around. But the lug nut torque is the one thing I know that will cause rotors to warp. Hope this helps.
Spec is 165ft/lbs. I think it is the service manual. I just changed the brake pads on my Excursion 6 months ago. Torqued lug nuts to 165 ft/lbs and rechecked the next day. 75,000+ miles on the original rotors with no issues.
