Upper Intake

Getting ready to do some injector work and remembering the last time I pulled the upper intake. That pesky Torx bolt at the center location that is sooo much fun to get out then back in. Was just wondering what tricks you guys use to get that one out. Thinking about a long reach Torx bit, but wondering how long it would have to be?
BTW, I can't remember what size bit that one takes (I hate getting old). Any of you remember off the top?
Thanks

Big Red, a friend of mine installed a 1" trick flow heat spacer (TFS-51520004)on his 5.0 efi. truck. Now he can change valve cover gaskets and injectors without removing the upper intake. I like that idea so much I bought the spacer for my 5.0 Bronco. I haven't had time to install it yet. You will have to get two new bolts for the two holes in the middle of the intake, on the Mustangs the middle bolts are longer. I bought mine at Summit Racing for $63.95

That raises all kinds of new questions.

What impact on performance (if any) did your friend gain (or lose)?
What was done about the Tranny dipstick mounting to the intake? I guess a 1" bracket extension could be easily fabricated.
Were there any issues with hood clearance with the intake raised 1"?

Initially the prospect of having an additional 1" of clearance under the upper intake is very appealing, but I would want to ensure there is no downside.

Thanks,
Tom

He told me he didn't notice any performance gains, his truck is a 1985, had no clearance issues, he said he didn't have any problems with hooking the egr tube up. With the longer runners he should have picked up a little torque. I'm planning on putting mine on next week, my Bronco is a 94. I can post any problems and pictures when I do it.

well the spacer in that area is supposed to increase runner lenght which in turn helps produce torque lower in the rpms. i have no first hand experience with it though

Exclamation had the same question

had the same question at the machine shop where my moter is right now and they told me that the longer the runners are good for upper rpms and the shorter they are for good torque thought it was the other way around any body else have any experience with this it? this statement might hold true maybe this is why your friend doesent notice any difference unless he is ******* the **** out of it in the upper rpms oh yeah I use a t 40 and socket with a long 1/4 inch extension to get mine out not to bad

Big Red don't bother with the trick flow 1" spacer. I tried to install mine today the only thing I ended up with was two broken upper intakes. Every thing was perfect snugged up intake bolts intake was setting flat on the gasket when I started tightning the bolts the back bolt hole would crack. So now I'm without an upper intake so Monday I'll be hitting the junk yards. I will not have any type of spacer on the intake when it goes together this time.
