Upper intake help

Upper intake help
I'm working on my grandfathers 90 F-150 with a 302. I am trying to get the upper intake off but cannot figure out how I am going to get that center bolt out. It appears to be a torx screw, possibly a T-40, is there a special tool to get at this? I have a 3/8 drive torx socket but the base is too wide to fit between the intake to reach the bolt. A 1/4 drive might work but I have not seen one in that size. Any ideas?

This question just came up a day or so ago. I know its a torx, and think its a T-40 or T-45. You need a long extension and you can access it through the center of the intake, there is a slit in it. Its not really noticable, but if you look for it you'll see it.

I used a 1/4" drive with an 18"" extension, 1/4" socket, and a torx bit secured with electric tape. It may have been a T40 bit, I don't remember.
Remove the vacuum hoses from the tree first and also the PCV hose on the back. I don't remember the torque values for re-installation. I can check the Ford service manual if you need.
Remember to get a new gasket to go between the two intake halves.

I see the cut in the intake, I just haven't found a torx that will reach. If someone makes a T-40 torx in 1/4, that might work. But the 3/8 drive I have will not fit due to the base being to wide. The 3/8 extension does fit though. Just not the bit itself. Now a bit with a long torx end on it would work.

I already have half of the upper part of the engine tore apart. I am doing head gaskets on the truck. I have the gasket set already. Luckily out of all the trucks I own, the 1980-96 manual covers most of them, so I have the specs. The upper intake is the only thing holding me up now. Besides that stupid EGR hose that is bolted to the rearmost exhaust manifold bolt that refuses to let go.

Tried that, the bit is a little to tall for that to work. I'm gonna see if I can dig up that other thread.

Ok, I found it. if I would have gone just a little further I would have seen it earlier. Looks like I am not the only one with the problem right now. LOL. Now its time to see if I can dig up and old torx bit somewhere to use.
I even checked the Ford manual thinking they had some crazy special tool just designed for this purpose, but nothing. It seems they have tools for everything else.

ive gotta a 5.8l so im not sure if there the same, but i got a 3/8 drive to ft in there....there should be a square shape cut out of the bottom of that slit, just big enough for a 3/8 drive to fit into.... it took some twisting, and precision but i got one in there....but then again i would have prefered a 1/4 drive

I found not the set pictured, but something pretty similar to it at northern. It was the same price though. It worked very well.

I found not this exact set, but something kind of similar at northern. Price was the same and beat the hell out of making something to work. Oh yeah, and its a T40 bit.
