I've got the chance to pick one up for $500 bux (I doubt any less as the seller knows what hes got.)

Its got either 57k or 70k (don't remember which).

He was saying its not as good as the older ones but I was thinking, "its a 429."

Is my thinking correct?

not sure what you mean by not as good as the early ones. no it won't have the vaunted and over hyped DOVE heads, it should have the D3VE heads which will give a lower compression ratio, which will make it better for use with todays pump gas. I believe it will have the retarded timing set which is an easy fix by putting in the earlier timing set. but the crank, and rods are the same, the block will be a D1VE which is not a bad block in anyway although I would consider decking it for better quench (the D1VE blocks were a little taller than the early blocks, also to reduce compression ratio). Even in stock form they are decent and with just those two mods it will really suprise you and for a little more you could upgrade the cam, put in better pistons if you want to the sky is the limit with that engine depending on what you want.
And yeah there is just something cool about bieng able to say " yeah I got a 429 in it" expecially since that engine was not used in the light duty trucks ever.

I'm thinkin' that alum heads will take care of a few issues, and pistons that yield a higher CR will help too.

But I'll worry about a intake, cam, headers, exhaust and all that before I get into the aluminum dept.

well you could go with the alum TFS street heads they are 72cc chambers (same or slightly smaller than the early heads) a decent intake, may I suggest a stealth for most applications, a good dual pattern cam, and a set of L&L headers.

L and L headers are cheaper from Bronco Graveyard though. I just ordered mine yesterday.
