F-700 429?

I posted this in the 385 engine series section, but I got no response and am going to look at the engine tomorrow.

How do you tell the difference between a car 429 and a Heavy Duty 429 for a dump truck.

My 89 F-700 with the 429 has a cracked block and I have found a used 429 out of an F-600 that burnt and needs a new carb, distributor and such. He thinks it may have been out of a car originally and converted for the truck, or the transmission was also from the car. I need to know how to tell if it will work for the transmission in my truck and is it worth it. What am I getting with trying to get the burnt one up and going. It is $150, should I go for it if I can trade over the carb and distributor and misc. parts from the cracked block 429.

The burned motor probably should have the heads pulled as well. How much crap went down that carb when it burned?

I wouldn't buy it on a bet.

As for the difference between a truck and car motor, there are some clues here--casting numbers, some differences in external parts and motor mounts. Flywheel and clutch are different.

truck 429 performance - 460 Ford Forum

A car 429 would have earlier casting and date codes, as they ran '68-'73 or so, while the 429 truck came along in '82, so they say. The 460 was around all that time, but it is basically the same externally as the car 429.

More of the same:

Not sure if this would apply to engines or not, but a buddy of mine bought a front axle out of a truck that had burned and had nothing but problems with it. The axle looked just fine, but the fire was hot enough to take all the heat treating out of it. Just something to think about....

370 & 429 truck engines introduced in 1979.

Easiest way to see the difference would be the cast iron timing case... Built that way to hold the weight of the engine on the front engine mount..

Also the crank snout is bigger. Also will have dual smog pumps, dual thermostats.. center drop exhaust manifolds. Large iron trans mounted to the back of it..

otfher than that would be kinda tough to tell the difference..
