It's Time for my 400

Well it’s time to build my 400. I’ve been looking over your shoulders for about a year now and this is what I’ve come up with for my ‘79 F150 4WD.

Badger flat tops .030 over
ARP Rod bolts
Weiend Intake
Edelbrock 600 CFM
Stainless Valves (3 Angle)
Hardened seats
Scorpion Roller rockers
Comp Cam 255 DEH K Kit
Mill heads and deck block .015 each
Ported heads
Headers

What do you think? Is this a good recipe for a daily driver at 4800 feet?
Dyno anyone?

I would be concerned about compression given the decking of block and heads and cam...maybe you ran the numbers...I lost the link to get the dynamic compression with that setup. Decking the block and heads is also expensive and not needed imo. I like the cam but, personally would go with a holley carb- same size. what size valves? also a full roller timing chain straight up. I'd also get better harmonics and have rotating assembly balanced as you have mismatched parts.

I think you pretty well nailed it. I bet the ddyno would be about 310hp and 410tq. and that would be with a good solid low end curve. A lot depends on head flow aftr porting which is a guess.

For a daily driver stick with the Edelbrock 1406. Remember that while you are driving at 4800 feet you may be going higher and lower. Just deck the block and heads to clean them up. That should make your static compression about 9:1.

Many people just solvent tank the rods and check them for size and warp using the OEM bolts. Make sure the bolts are straight and not twisted around and pressing on the rod shoulder. Removing and installing the rod bolts can distort the rods.

The Dyno Sim results are T=450@2500, and HP=315@4000.
The Torque curve is flat to nearly 4000 RPM.
One more thing that you might consider is to use a 460 or 351C-4V intake valve.
T=452@2500, and HP=325@4500.
The torque curve is still flat, but it stays up a little longer.

The DCR is about 8.1:1. This should be OK at 4800 feet.

rods have to be resized when installing new bolts! i wouldn't bother the seats unless they are sunk in real bad. if good flowing heads are high on your list, consider finding a set of 2V Cleveland heads. the exhaust port of your heads have a water jacket invading the port, the 2V C's don't. then you wouldn't necesarily need the DEH cam either.

I agree with grclark351 about the 351C-2V heads. Early 400 heads are another good choice, but these have slightly smaller combustion chambers, so take that into account before doing any milling or decking. In fact you can save money on milling and decking and put it into the 351C-2V or early 400 heads, and get better flow in the trade.

The heads have already been done. They have the stock size stainless valves.

I cc’d the chambers. After the polish, new seats, new stainless valves and the milling, I’ve got 75cc chambers.

Balancing is a definite to do. Same with the straight up cam with the chain that came with the “K” kit.

I was wondering about the EGR. I might have to go with one. They do smog check hear in Utah. If I curve the dizzy to run without EGR will it be a problem if I have to switch the manifold to one with EGR?
