Hi I am new to this site and I found it just in time. I have just startrd my my first rebuild and it happens to be on a Ford 460. A year ago an old guy was selling his 79 F150 he claimed only 40,000. on his remanufactured engine. His story was he bought it from a guy who drove through the Mt st helens ash storms. He said it took him a case of oil just to get it home. He didnt want a rebuild from the ford dealer so he paid for a refurbished block and heads and some after market pistons. When I opened it up I found a bent pushrod And the culprit must have been a stuck valve. So he must have been telling me the truth about not driving it much everything inside looked real good. I took everything to the performance shop yesterday where they will do the heads and block and polish the crank. also a recurve of the distributor. Now the only reason I have started this rebuild is because I had found a 74 F350 custom w/a 460 in it. Cool looking truck, factory yellow with nice tires and rims. I was amazed how good the body was just some normal bed wear and some minor pick up work to have done. I thought what a fine example to bring back to life. Even though it did not run I got it for $300.00 at auction. I believe the crank is screwed in it but I figured I can just rebuild that 460 that the old man said had low miles on and he wasn't lying from the looks of it. So sorry for the long story I hope you enjoyed it but now I need to know should I change the cam and lifters now that I am in there and to what exactly will be good for towing I have the dana 60 I believe which came stock and the c-6 automatic. The other question is should I send my tranny to have it bench rebuilt now that it is out of the truck It ran ok on its only drive but?? Keep in mind that I am preparing this truck for a 2500 mile trip from W.A to P.A. so few break downs would be a plus, also should the rear end be checked? Thanks you guys
