How important?

D1VE-6015-A2B (71 - lincoln motor)
D3VE-A2A (73-heads)
D8VE-9C485-CC (78- valve covers)

bought the 460. guy had the motor in a 78 F250 4x4 C 6 manual. Said he bought the motor @ a salvage yard, came out of a 78 car-did't specify.

I'm putting the 460 into 77 F 250 2whl Camper Special C 6 auto. swapping from the 400 to 460.

Went to local Napa to price some parts- starter, power steering, alternator, etc. priced the flexplate (i'm swapping w/ RTM-my manual flywheel for his auto flexplate). the salesperson asked the normal questions- what year, make, and motor size. Explained to him where the 460 motor came from, not knowing if this mattered or not. he was'nt sure so he used my 77 to pull up the prices. He asked me what was the tooth count. He said there was two different flywheels. I believe the toothcounts he gave was either 163 and 164- or he might of said 173 and 174 too, can't really remember right now. I thought i just needed any auto 460 flexplate before 1979? Are there different toothcounts for auto flexplates?

confused. My main question here was to ask if I should know what the 460 motor originally came out of? In the future, what info do i give the salesperson. I even went to the FORD Dealership Service Department to find out if they could tell me what the 460 came out of. He said he would have to pull books to research. He said he was only asked a similiar question only one time(indentifying heads). I told him i would search the internet to see if i could find anything first. Went thru 385 series, search tool-engine indentification, sections 1-20. spent most of my shift looking for info. Came up empty, so far.

However, I called a salvage yard and asked them for parts. told them i was swapping the 400 to 460. the guy said he has everything i need. not sure if he is BSing or not. He does sound more confident then Napa and the Ford Tech though.

i have a running 460 and two 460 blocks laying around the house. each of them have a date stamped on the front passenger side of the block between the timing chain cover and the deck surface. this is the date they began building the engine. if the engine came out of a 78 vehicle you should see a stamping such as 7x13 or 8x07. the 7 or 8 would the year 77 or 78, the next letter is the month built and the last two numbers the day of month. there s/b a spacer between the front damper and the timing chain cover. if it has a hatchet shaped weight on it the engine is externally balanced...straight cylinder shaped spacer means the engine is internally balanced. with d8 valve covers the engine is no older than a 78. and since your block is a d1 casting, it probably came out of a 78 or 79 model year vehicle. i think the d1 block was replaced with the d9 block. look at summit racing and see what they list for a 460 flexplate. cheers, garsten

i thought the 460's were all internally balance motors until the change in 1979. if i'm right i guess that would make the motor 1978. what i would like to find out is what kind of car the motor came from.

here is a number i found stamped on the surface where the motor mates to the trans.

8Y950412

has a upside down y just to the lower right of these numbers. ( less than an inch)
thought i read a thread where someone was asking the same question. some one deciphered the code for him to find out what vehicle the motor originally came from.

is the origin of the motor important? especially when i'm buying parts. once had a 51 *****'s w/ 78 CJ drivetrain. when i bought parts for that i always told them i needed parts for a 78 CJ. any info would help. thanks.

does anyone know what the stamped # is. (back of motor)

the metal plate on the front of the motor looks like it was banged on. cannot read the numbers.

I don't know what that casting number would be but the date casting for the block should be in the lifter gallery.

i dont know about the numbers, but i do know that knowing the year and type of vehicle it came from will make getting parts alot easier...for instance, i have a 78 460 in my 76 F-150, if i tell them i have a 76 F-150 with a 460 they give me the wrong belts everytime, if say i have a 78 F-250 with a 460(where the engine came from) i usually get what i need the first time, usually....
