I have a 292 y block that is blown and I was wondering if anyone knows of any motors besides the y block that will bolt to the 4 speed transmission bellhousing. I was wondering if a 302 will bolt up? Thanks!!
Nooooo! Y would you junk a old Y block. They may be small but mighty. It would not compare to a big block but if you just spend some time and money you can rebuilt it to be a perfect motor for yourself.
The number of questions that appear on FTE, and other sites (clubhotrod, hotrod.com, Ol'School, etc.) regarding motor swaps are very high. Most of the guys asking the questions on swaps dont have a lot of experience, and therefore the change is a large consumer of time and money. From personal experience being in the group of nonexperienced and having gone through a swap, I would suggest you rebuild the Y. It is as nostalgic as the truck you find so appealing, and will give equal or better service than the replacement you are considering.
However, if you are dead set on swapping the motor, then also just throw away that humongous 4 speed and put in an updated tranny to go with your new motor. You will have to read a lot, and ask a bunch of questions along the way.
I guess 46 is right If you're dead set on replacement go for it I'm sure any Ford motor product will do you good service, however I STRONGLY believe you should stick with a Y.
The 59 292 is one of the best of the y-blocks, and it very likely has some of the best best big valve heads bolted to it. It can be bored .110" and a 312 crank can have its main journals turned to fit the 292 and you'd have a pretty decent 322" engine. Check out http://www.ford-y-block.com/.
I'm pretty sure that a FE and an MEL will bolt in. I have an FE bellhousing with the side mounts for a truck. It has the HD transmission (like a T18) pattern. I'm looking for the FE bellhousing with the Cruiseomatic transmission pattern to add to my collection of bellhousings.
