The thing is I went to buy a class 3 hitch for my truck and on the box it said something like 98'-00' Ranger EXCEPT- 98'-00' style side (flare side, step side what ever you want to call it). I was wandering what the difference in the fame rails was if you understand what I mean
Styleside is not the same thing as flareside/stepside. Styleside is the "regular" bed.
Depending on where you're buying the hitch ask someone there (if it's a reputable shop) or see if you can contact the company that makes the hitch (if you're shopping at Walmart).
I can't imagine there being a different rear frame width for the stepside verus the regular bed. I know when I put a class 3(hiden hitch) on my 94 Splash the box said something to the effect 93- RAnger including Splash
I didn't really look at the box when I got my class 3 hitch, I just made sure that my 02 was listed. Don't recall whether or not a 98 - 00 flareside was on it or not.
Yeah as said, styleside isn't the same as flareside/stepside.
Styleside is the stock pretty much flat rear fenders. Flare or stepside is the huge hump ones around the tire with the little step (what the heck is it there for?) up near the front.
Thinking about this, I also can't imagine that the frame rails are different. But, I'm wondering whether the spare tire mounting is in some way different. Was '98 when they went to a winch instead of a bar?
Seems like I read somewhere on here of someone having trouble with interference between the hitch an spare tire mount, but I don't remember for sure.
I could see the old bar mount interfering possibly. Then again the guy who owned my Ranger before me had a hitch on there and it didn't seem to get in his way.
Bought a Class 3 Valley Hitch from Farm and Fleet, and I didn't have any problem with the spare. But, make sure you get the one that fits your truck, cause a lot of these new hitches use existing holes in the frame. Mine did, and it sure went in easy-about an hour. Saving a few bucks ain't worth it if you're gonna fight to get it on...
my truck has the winch style spare tire holder. I had went to a camper dealership and bought a class three hitch that they had said would work, but the box said it wouldn't so I tried it out any how to find out that only 1 bolt hole on each side would line up no matter what I tried
