HI ALL my son has a ranger 88 with a 2.3 auto and when it warms up it will not shift in to 3 untill you drop the rpms ,we are going to replaced the fluid and filter see if that helps, but if that is not vacuum diaphragm??
Definetly replace fluid/filter. Might just do a full flush.
What about if you manually control gears? Will it do it then?
Under hard acceleration will it shift into third? Try this somewhere out away from everybody because with a 2.3 you're not gonna get into third anytime soon anyways. Be careful.
How many miles? Sounds like perhaps the 2-3 shift thing.
Get up to a speed where it shifts into third, then manually pull down into second (be careful not to go into first), and then push the selector back up into D or whatever and see if it shifts back into third.
I'd also suggest focusing on the vac modulator. Usually a fluid flush and filter, unless the filter is OEM and the fluid has never been changed in untold miles since new (ie, candidate for filter restriction allbeit pretty rare) is just wishful thinking. ATF is very rich in solvents by design to keep things from sticking and gumming up.
