hey guys i just picked up a 90 2.9 out of a bii and I am going to swap into my 85 2.8 bii what all should i need to change out? I know the gas tank is not the same, but will the tranny bolt right up? And what about the guages and all the misc. stuff, what I am going to have to deal with while swapping this motor
You got knowledge of wiring? Your going to need it, sence theres ALOT of wiring you need to do to hook up to ECM and all that stuff.....sure hope you have the 90's ecm and harnass. Its good if you labled where everything goes when you ripped that motor out.
Other then that you will also need the higher fuel pressure pump(s) from and EFI bronco II or explorer.
Everything should bolt up, the 2.8 and 2.9 are the same engine. I you have a 5-speed, this is a great time to do your clutch aswell.
Don't give anyone the idea that the 2.hate and 2.9L are the same engine, because that'll give folks the idea that bunches of parts interchange between the two. And that's not going to happen.
I don't see why you can't live with the current B2 gas tank. The engine doesn't know what is there. You do need to be sure you have metal fuel lines and not rubber pieces for the higher pressured EFI and that the hoses are routed properly, though.
You DO need factory wiring diagrams for both vehicles involved, donor and transplant vehicle. A bunch of the 2.9L stuff can be snipped out in all likelihood, but undo the wrong stuff....and you're stuck.
I would have gone with a 4.0L myself if Iwas in that spot, but you find what you can for the swap, I guess. A lot of work for 0.1L's of engine, though.
The gas tank in my 84 Bronco II is different than one from a fuel injected Bronco II.I replaced the one in my 84 when it started to leak with one I got from the wreckers that came from a later truck. The opening where the pick-up goes into is a lot larger on the later fuel tanks to make room for installing the in-tank pump.I am not sure when they made the changeover so you may have to install a frame mounted pump if you don't wish to change tanks.
