New to this part of the forum. I own a 86 BII with the 2.9 slightly less horsepower than a squirrel in a wheel. That notwithstanding I love the vehicle and at 86K on the speedometer, starting to worry about what might go wrong. That is what I am looking for from this forum.
I know with all the data points from readers it might help to understand what is coming around the corner……so to speak.
well ive got a 85 with a 2.8 and about 300,000 miles and yes its a little lagging in the power side (slightly less horsepower than a squirrel in a wheel) i like that never heard that one before. but she starts, runs, and always gets me where i need to go. its just now beginning to smoke and i think it just needs new valve seals. go for it drive the snot out of it. i abuse mine pretty good and its holding up great.
Lucas KY.................hum!
I can see the commercial now.
Snap-popwoooooooosshhhhhhh, as the guy sits beside the bed and says, looking into the camera
with a smile “dear are you coming to bed’……….while holding the can….
332k miles here... but the parts are breaking and I'm on my third water-to-oil leak and selling it. It's my fault the water is leaking into the oil, though... I cracked the head this past summer from overheating the engine (long story) and used cheap metallic sealers to fix it. It holds up for about 2-3 thousand miles, and it goes... but it's kept my truck running since July... so I'm happy!

if u got an automatic (A4LD) then that's prolly what it is... I've heard that the autos are slugs (being that I own one) and a dude at my job used to own a Ranger from my year model and he had the 5 speed with the 2.9 and he said his was pretty quick.
seriously, is there any help for these little motors
my other cars are a supercharged T-bird
and an excursion with a 6.0 that is a rocket
my town car is REAL slow, poor B-II
Got an 86 bronco ll 2.9 v6 FI with 300.000 original miles and in the last year I have only had to replace the water pump, starter, alternater, which all were factory oem parts anyways--wow not bad... with the exception of the tranny now....I don't baby mine at all drive the bugger out of it and she still runs....
My problem with my truck are the heads, head gaskets, and valve cover gaskets... I believe the valve cover gaskets are blown (dirty oil residue near the seals as long as I've owned the truck), blown head gasket(s) (water leaking into oil) and cracked head(s) (from overheating over the summer). I ghetto fixed the head gasket(s)/head crack(s) a couple of times with this stuff called K&W block sealer since I really can't afford to have new heads put on or anything... not only that, something on it breaks every couple of thousand miles, so I think the engine's having its final toll. Granted, it does have 332,000 original miles. Drop a new engine, and it'll be awesome. Already has had a new A4LD put in (currently 2.5 years old). I just don't wanna go through the whole engine replacement or whatever I'd have to do to make it reliable process. I'm just gonna buy me a little 4-banger daily driver to get me around, because they can still do everything I wanted to do in the BII (minus the 4 wheel drive).
