A4LD problem

Not sure if this is the right forum to post problems about my BII since I have an A4LD on an 1986 4x4. But here goes.
Transmission has been rebuilt once. Less then 40K miles on it.
Total mileage on BII, just turned it over 100K. Had 1986 BII 4x4 since 1990.

Specs: 1986 Bronco II 4x4 Manual Locking hubs
2.9L EFI engine, Power Steering, A/C,
equiped with Transmission fluid cooler

Problem that I am having with my A4LD is when it down shifts at low speeds when coming to a stop or turning, I hear a loud clunking sound. Happens around 17mph. This is not a problem when excelerating. But it seems to take longer to shift and its a bit harder at 17 mph and then smooths out all the way up to Overdrive. I know what it sounds like when it won't shift and slips, and when the ball bearings in the cv joint drive shaft fail to engage on the transmission side. (That was the most Awful sound)

Took my BII in to have transmittion fliud changed. Mech said that the Governor was bad and replaced it. Total cost for fluid change and part $470. This did not solve the problem. Driving on the highway is fine. Stop and go in town traffic, it clunks.
Its has all stock parts. Including the CV joint type Drive shaft, which was replaced 2 years ago. The clunking noise seems to radiate between the transmission and rear axle. But I still think its the transmission. I am wondering if the vacuum diaphragm is causing this problem. The clunking noise is more pronounced when I slow down quicker. When I manually downshift before coming to a complete stop, I don't get the clunking noise. I know the history of the A4LD is not a good one, however, I have babied this truck. Wife says I drive like an Ole lady with it and despises my BII. I Like my BII and I want to keep it going for as long as I can afford it. If the tranny is going to have to be rebuilt, I will have to part with it. Hopefully that is not the case here.

DieHard Bronco II 4x4 owner.

Does this transmission have a modulator valve? If so it controls upshifts and is powered by vacuum. Check for vacuum leak and check for fluid at the inlet of the modulator valve. If fluid is present, replace the valve.

If your having a delayed shift problem somethings going to clunk when the tranny finally gets into the gear. If the transmission shifts on time but you hear the clunk, check all U-Joints.

One more thing to look at is the trans. mounts ,engine mounts, and the bushings in the cross membre for the t-case.Also check the bushings on the rear end -springs, swaybar, shocks. If any are bad you can bet a bang on a shift change.

Thanks for the Replys...

I can live with the slight hard and delayed shifting up. As for the clunking. It only occurs when downshifting from 2 to 1. Its more pronounced after driving my BII around. If I had the tools and a lift, I would change some of the parts out myself. However, I will be taking the Beast (BII) to the shop again. When I do take my Bronco II in, the mechanic will be riding shotgun while I drive it around. Know I will be able to to tell the Ford Mechanic to check on a few other things as well thanks to all your replies.

I will keep all of you posted as soon as I can get my
bronco II worked on with the results..

Again thanks for your insight and input.
