brake pedal sticks

On my 96 f 240 4x4 auto the brake pedal stuck after I let off the brake it did this for the 12 mile ride home,I had to use my foot to pull it bake up or brakes would be stuck on.you think it may be the master cylinder?the master cylinder is has never been replaced and the truck has 200,000.what could be making the pedal stick like this?

wither the master cylinder or the pedal assembly. There should be some type of return spring, at least there is on the older all manual assemblies of the trucks I'm used to. Anyway, I'd go poke around under there first, then go master cylinder. Hate to replace it and find out it was a 5 cent broken spring.

There's a return spring for the pedal. Sounds like yours broke.

wait a second, this is intermittant? Well in that case Im gonna say master cylinder. The return spring wouldn't cause an intermittant problem. It would either be broke or not broke. Go with the master cylinder, the valve body is sticking.

Angry

You will need to bench bleed the master cylinder before putting it on, but not to sound harsh, if you did not know this, I suggest taking the vehicle to a repair shop to have this done. The entire brake system will need bled after this operation. You are taking the life of yourself and others in your hands if you don't know how to do this properly.

I would think it's the booster as well. The one on my '77 F-250 stuck so hard the pedal wouldn't even move at all. Bear in mind, it had been sitting for 12+ years...

bench bleeding isn't the hardest thing in the world to do. Just pump the cylinder with fluid in the resevoirs until the bubbles quit coming out. This could take you a few min. though, and it is really important to get all the bubbles out.

I haven't had any booster problems, as I have manual brakes, Skinner and Troy, what were the sypmtoms and the fix? Don't know that much about boosters.
