Each team is given 73 minutes to play the game, with two 1 minute time outs. If a team cannot complete the game in said time, then they are disqualified.
Congrats to both the Canadian and American curling teams. Gold for Canada and a first ever medal (bronze) for America. If Pete Fenson makes pizza anything like he curls, that would be one tasty pie!
I only heard of curling during the '02 Winter Olympics. This year, I had a DVR and recorded a bunch of it, and watched it. I also looked it up on the internet so I could figure it out to some degree. I was hooked. Now I'm thinking of how I might move to Canada. The only problem is that I might get killed when I root for the Red Wings.
Mil1ion, you forgot to tell us about the "hacks"--the two "pedals" the players push off of in the back. Right-handers push off the left hack, vice versa for lefties. I'm just curious why there aren't shots where the rock is held way out and/or given much more curl--maybe that would be coming in the future under X-treme Curling.
I saw the gold medal match between Canada and Finland--that 6-point end was cool. Too bad the dude couldn't keep his heartrate down and score 7. That would be almost like missing a last-second 3-pointer that would have brought your personal point total in a basketball game to 100.

Thats a cool thing about curling...the amount that the stone "swings" or "curls" depends on the "weight" or how hard the rock is thrown, and how much it is swept on the way down the ice. The amount of spin on a rock has very little to do with how it will curl.
One shot that you cannot make in curling is to throw the stone straight. It will eventually start to spin one way or the other, and then curl that way.

In my experience, X-treme curling usually related to the amounts of alcohol consumed and number of laws broken between (and during) games at small town bonspiels.
We've actually had the Ontario Provincial Police come down on the ice during a game and explain some of the finer points of the provincial liquor laws to us while we finished off our drinks.
