I can no longer take the silence while driving about in my 76 F-150. If somebody can tell me if there is any way to remove the in-dash speaker without tearing the whole das out it would save my passengers from my unbearable singing. Thanks for any help.
Matt, Your truck should have a stereo radio. I have recently seen speakers (in boxes) mounted on the floor at the end of the seats and pointing towards the door. You may want to think about that. You wouldn't have to cut up your truck to mount them. I have seen them in Crutchfields catalog. They have a web site.

In the cool still quite of night you can hear chevies rusting away.
If you pull off a door panel, you will find stock cutouts for 6 1/2 speakers. You will find that if you use these, you will be much happier than if you used the dash mounted speaker.
I tried to remove and re-install the speaker in the center of my dash. After several cuts, bruises and alot of swearing I gave up, it was very difficult to re-install the speaker in the center of the dash.
Put speakers in the door, that's what I ended up doing and it was alot easier, plus I got stereo sound instead of the single "mono" you get with one center mounted dash speaker. (assuming your deck is stereo)
I'd like to jump in here with my 2 cents:You can remove the stock dash mounted single speaker, by removing the instrument cluster, and possibly the heat/ac control panel, you'll need to be in there anyway to install a new radio, the 6 1/2" door speakers work real well, plus if your familiar with vintage Mustang aftermarket stereos, AND SPEAKERS '71 to '73 dual speaker dash replacement stereo speakers will fit the '73-'79 Fseries perfectly(bolt in) these, along with the door speakers will sound real good, unless your into the big amps, & thumpers the kids today have. Rick
does anybody know if those mustang dash speakers would happen to bolt into a '68 f100? or, does anybody know of a source for the replacement mono speakers?
i've been trying to figure out a clean way to install a radio, and that's the best idea i've heard yet...
Sam, I've seen guys that didn't want to cut their dash, bolt the radio under the dash. If you do that there is no tracks and you can put in stereo. The dash on both of my trucks were cut when I got them, and one of them not very good.
If you plan to cut the dash, I would suggest that you mask it with tape, draw your cut out lines on the tape and cut if out with a saber saw. You can drill a hole near the corner to be able to help start the cut.
Good luck.

WOW, this forum has been around 23 yrs?
anyways i was curious about this so im reviving the thread.
i need a new windshield at some point anyways and was hoping to replace this front speaker with as big as possible to add some bass to the smallish 6 inch door 2 ways i just put in.
I would go with a powered sub except these trucks rear windows are so easy to break into a nine yr old thief could steal that 500$ unit in 5 min
SO until i have a garage parking again i wonder if a 6x9 will fit in there?
any stereo experts ever tried this?
i imagine the one in there is only 5x7 and i will need to enlarge the hole/grille, which i will only attempt the day b4 i replace the windshield.
i imagine the 6x9 hole will have to be shifted rearward as much as possible for htr box clearanc and even sit some of the speaker on top of dash if it has those plastic frames they sometimes come with
No idea how much you are going to need to cut out. Use some round bar stock to make drop rods to put in the rear slider lower tracks. And get a set of these if your vent wings do not lock.
I never thought of speakers in boxes under the seat ends aimed outwards at the doors, maybe upwards a little like 45 degrees, etc, maybe partly facing forwards too ... but it's an intriguing idea. I'm wondering now, maybe I put a set there, maybe 6x9s even ... and remove them from my doors? Then I could flatten my speaker grill holders and not hit my knuckles on them when winding my windows up or down? My knuckles do not hit my storage pockets, so I could easily either remove the grills which stand near an inch proud of the panel, maybe just fill with thin stuff .... or just build new panels. 5 screws secure them, and I have the covering on hand.
I'm pretty sure that shutting doors with windows and vents closed does no good for door mounted speakers. Speakers in the cab would not see air trying to escape.
I know, I'm no help getting the dash speaker out or swapped. I long ago forgot about it on purpose, like it's not even there no more.
I ended up taking a bit of a different approach and I had the opportunity while nothing was under the dash. 3D printed a 3/8 inch thick plate, cut out 3 inch holes and mounted 2 higher quality but reasonable 3.5 inch speakers. I offset them just enough to not interfere with the duct work. I'll use those as "front speakers and the 2 in door as "rear" speakers - got a retro radio - should be good enough for the small cab
