Front Speakers

Anyone know where front speakers originally went in a 1970 F-100? Right now I've jus got 2 lil 4" speakers that I installed myself in the rear pillars behind the door...might want to put some in the front but not sure if I wanna cut into the dash

The speaker was in the dash above the radio, perfed area. For stereo 2 speaker went inplace the single 4x7 AM speaker went. So pick a place and install them. Most put them in the door, not wanting to damage the padded dash.

The parts catalog shows no dash mounted speaker after 1966. The illustration of the padded dash shows no speaker cut-out. The speakers (right/left) were installed in the door panels behind plastic grilles, which were painted the same color as the interior.

The exact same speakers/grilles were used on 1969/70 Mustangs.

Edit: AM Radios were optional back then. Ford also offered a hang on stereo. There's no speaker listed for the top of the dash, only door speakers are listed. The dash illustration shows no speaker cut-out, like 1966 and earlier trucks used.

I bought a new 1968 F250, but where the speaker was, I don't recall.

Is your padded dash perforated for the speaker below? I couldn't find a pic of any dash speaker, or the removable grille...but seem to recall some Ford trucks, instead of using grilles, just had perforated dash pads.

I failed to mention that the speaker was mounted under the dash. Not from the top like you would consider dash mounted. My 68 has the perf in the pad and dash. May need to make a side note on your master parts book. Not that I would ever put a speaker in the center of the dash.

I don't like the doors due to elements and the bad sound if you don't install some sound deadening material, but they are easy to work on.

well I took the dash pad off, was cracked and all around gone to crap so I decided to jus run it witout one considerin the paint underneath was still very nice...but I do have some holes in the center of the dash jus above the radio...is that probably where the speaker went? I have a couple 6.5" speakers that I'm wantin to put in...and suggestions on those?

That's it. I guess ford dropped this and moved to the doors, on later models. But you will not get stereo if in the center.

It all depends on what you are going to do with the dash. Since I have the windshield out I can drill holes in the dash easly. And I have decide to make a custom dashpad, since I have already made a new instrument panel, and armrest. I have to upgrade the defrost vents in my 68, 2 spots do not cut it. The sound can be heard better if mounded high. Since you mounted 2 in the rear columns, my guess you will pick a good location. Most use the door panels to mount the speakers. They have a lot of room, use the waterproof insert to protect the speakers against the elements. But you need to add some sound deadening to the door if none.

I'm not really a big fan of door speakers either, may jus stick wit only the 2 in the rear pillars. Or might create a box to put the up on the celing of the truck. I'm not too keen on the idea of cuttin holes in the dash of this truck, which was my original thought. Any idea if the sound would end up too muffled if I just mounted the 2 6.5"ers under the dash on either side?

Someone makes an molded headliner that has 4 speakers mounted in it. And place for the radio or what ever. I had speakers under the seat and they were muffled. So I would expect some, just depends on what the sound has to do to get to you.

Since you have 2 in the column, see if you have room to mount 2 in the center. Then each would have stereo.

Are you still going to use a stem mount or make a din mount for the radio?

when i bought my truck there were 2 home like speakers mounted to the bottom of the dash, one on the driver side and one on the passenger side. Its been to long to remember how the mounts worked but the speakers were below the dash in their own little box.

I get a chuckle everytime I see the thread title in the lineup.

I recently lost an aunt that was born before the first airplane flight.

Trucks without stereos, imagine that.

That Under the dash thing sounds interesting...but it wouldn't work for me cuz I got switches mounted to the bottom of the dash that would kinda block those...oh well

Mine were mounted just in front of the door on the kick panel by the last owner. It's still a WIP and I've yet to hear them so I can't comment on how they sound.

Honestly, your best bet would be to talk to an instalation guy at a stereo store. They live for this stuff and can give you a better idea of what will work in your situation than the salsperson can.
