I was thinking of getting a NV 4500 transmission, but have heard that the gear ratio is too wide. What does this mean? I am looking for a good 5 speed manual tranny that will mount to a Ford 429.
LAST EDITED ON 02-May-01 AT 10:40 PM (EST)[p]When people say a tranny is "too wide", they are saying that there is too big a difference in ratio between nearby gears. For example 2nd gear may bee too low, yet 3rd gear is too high for a particular speed/RPM. This is typically not a problem for a larger V8 in a truck application, but for a whimpy 4-banger with a narrow engine power band, gross performance may suffer.
The NV4500 is a good tranny that was available in 90's Dodge & Chev. trucks. Think of it as a 3-speed with a granny 1st & OD 5th. The ratio's for Dodge are: 1st>5.61 2nd>3.04 3rd>1.67 4th>1.00 5th>.74 Chevy are: 1st>6.34 2nd>3.44 3rd>1.71 4th>1.00 5th>.73 The lower 1st in the Chevy is difficult to find because all the "Jeep guys" have been swapping them in. I prefer the Dodge version personally because it is fully synchronized including 1st&reverse--no more grinding gears to get R. I also know that some people swap different gears between the two to help narrow down the split, probably not necessary in your case.
Not sure if you can make it work for your engine, but these people will know. They sell new NV4500's, and make adapter kits for just about anything to bolt them to. http://www.advanceadapters.com/
What you have heard is correct, the NV4500 gears are very wide, I wouldn't use one unless you can get it for nothing. The Clark 280 series was available behind several ford engines in the mid 60s to the late 70s and are plentiful in big-truck salvage yards. I paid 250 $ for one with all the pieces to put it behind a 390. My 285 clark has 7.0 1st, 4.09 2nd, 2.24 3rd, 1.47 4th and direct fifth. Other clarks have different gears and Eaton can tell you the ratio if you read them the tag (Clark was bought out by Eaton). There are some real bargans out in the junkyards. The other possibilty is the 5 and 6 speed ZF trannys that come behind the newer 460s, again a salvage yard item. DF
