When I cancelled AOL, I simply got their customer service mailing address and wrote them a letter. I saved a copy of my letter. About a week later, they sent me a reply confirming my request to cancel. I saved that too.
I've lost count of how many PCs I've had to reload Windows on as a result of AOL. One of the places I used to work at had to threaten disciplinary action to get people to stop installing the POS software on their WORK laptops. People would install it, then they'd lose VPN access and lord knows what else. It is absolutely crazy how much stuff it installs and how far it goes integrating itself into Windows networking components to run.
Fortunately I was able to wean one of my grandparents off of it and warned my mom's parents not to use it in the first place.
its next to impossible to cancel with AOL..and they find ways to charge you for everthing...My account was signed up for high speed connection...went to my friends house, logged on using dial up, and got charged by the minute..after paying $300 (half of what the charged me), and talking on the phone for about an hour, i finally was able to cancel..HORRIBLE
AOL charged my credit card once for monthly service and I've never had their service or even thought about it. They took the charge off without any questions. I'm still not sure how they got my credit card info.

I just got bellsouth DSL and I'm fighting with AOL right now to shut down. Said he'd charge me half price to keep 'em. I told the guy they should have done that to begin with.
