holy wow!!! i had it with a free disk just for a month while i waited for my broadband to get hooked up, i called today to cancel and wow, i rather go to the dentist, on and on and on about giving me free aol time, asked a million questions and all soorts of heck, and i was talking to someone in india!!! my wife knows hindi so she surprised the lady with some few choice words in her native tongue!!!!
Be thankful that you were only using the free disk. Trying to get them to stop charging your credit card after having them for a while and then canceling is an even bigger nightmare.
hahha i coasted on their extended free months for about 5months, until they finally cancelled it... AOL is really bad anyway... you must use their software(a memory hog) to connect
Just be firm and tell them you don't want their service any more. Don't answer any other questions and when they ask if you'd like the free extension, plainly state "no, I'd like you to honor my request to cancel my service and if you can't do that I'd like to speak to your supervisor." That'll usually get the point across. If they continue, be stern and ask to speak to a supervisor.
I had a tough time getting rid of the some years ago. Had a problem getting their software off of my system also. I think they got into trouble over that issue. (not from me but from complaints issued by many people)
OK. . . I admit it. I carry the 'freebie' disks in my laptop bag for use when we are away, and away from 'hot spots'.
I pop in the freebie CD, and I'm online in a matter of minutes.
When it's time to cancel, I politely tell them that their service is not what I'm looking for.
One 'guy' said that, "He didn't know if he could cancel the service before the next billing cycle."
"Ummmmmm. . . yes you can. You see, this is a two month free trial, and I've used AOL for 2 weeks. IF I have a charge on my credit card, I'm coming to see you in Virginia. Have you seen the Capital One commercials where the irate customer keeps hearing 'No' and has come to seek vengance?!? I'm that guy!"
"Sir, your service will be cancelled as of midnight, tonight. Thank you for trying AOL."
AOL was fine until High speed cable.
You got the standard Indian AOL sales pitch everyone gets.
Did you know that the suicide rate for Indian AOL telemarketers is 133 deaths per 1000 and climbing? They are paid pennies per hour to beg us to sign up for a product that is fast becoming obsolete. People curse at them, mock them, complain to them, and worst of all, 999 out of 1000 customers cancel AOL even after 39 minutes of pleading, free offers and sales pitches.
If there really is an afterlife reincarnation I hope I become a worm that lives in dung...That is a better option than working as an Indian slave for Jonathon Miller
I did years ago....I just recently reduced my cable service to only the local channels + a few cable channels. I have the cheapest cable you can get now. When I talked to the comast operator, I had AOL flashbacks!
i canceled a-o-hell when i got cable. took all of 5 minutes, and 2 phone calls.
i told aol stop service, and when they started to asked the lame question and beg period, i simple told them i am moving to an area where there is no power, phones or need for your service. do whatever you want, but i am calling the credit card company after i get off the phone with you and telling them to deny any further claims made by you. i them hung up with the idiot babbling something about aol, and called am-ex and told them that aol was canceled, and i was not going to pay any charges relating to aol. end of story. the am-ex people said no problem, and that was the last i heard from them.
I used to work tech support for AOL about 8 years. The easest way to cancel is to call tech support and get the tech to cancel. Some of them will try to send you over to "Saves" (ie.. lie to the customer to keep them). If you are assertive the tech will cancel your account.
Aol is for people who don't know how to use the internet or their computers for that matter...
lol just kidding...
I tried them about 5 years ago and it took me 6 months and about 6 months of charges to get them to finally cancel my account. I got back 3 months of charges.
