Different type. Check my gallery for some pics. Also run some searches for the Kwik filter -- it's the same as the 6637.

The WW will fix it most of the time but to never hear it again you'll need the ATS.
Agree with you there. Surge happens with the stock airbox, you just can't hear it, and it may be to a lesser degree. Taking your foot out of the throttle will also cure those surge issues. I'd rather have the better filtration of the 6637 and just take my foot out of it every once in a while.

Can somebody describe what "surge" and "flutter" sound like? Also I'd like to know what "ATS" is. I love my Kwik filter and don't think I'm hearing anything bad. I can just hear the lovely "whistle" when I get on it and the "shhhhh" of the pressure releasing when I get off it or during shifts. Sometimes the pressure release is more pronounced when I have my foot deep and let off just as it's shifting into second or third...pretty sure that's normal though...it'd better be because I'd hate to give up that sound!

If taking your foot out of it and running 45 mph on the interstate is the fix, I need to spend some more money. I am unable to utilize 6th gear at all while pulling the 5ver due to "surge". With the stock air box I neither hear, see or feel the "surge". The filter was the only change since last hard pull. Why have all that extra power and be unable to use it?

Compressor surge is usually heard when you have a big load or going up a pretty steep grade. It's kind of hard to describe online but its like SS! SS! SS! and the boost gauge like stutters up and down. It's very hard on the stock turbo. The "ATS" I'm referring to is a high performance compressor housing that you can buy for around $400 and is made by a company named ATS. Here's a link to one: http://www.dieselinnovations.com/di....products&cat=1 (it's the 3rd one down)

jsmahan, you should try a wicked wheel. It will fix the surge most of the time. And if you don't think it's good enough you can always run it along with your ATS compressor shroud. A Wicked wheel is a lot cheaper then a new turbo.

I had planned on the WW but at some point here I read you actually lose boost with the WW and that the stock wheel may perform better than the WW with the ATS. Just trying to eliminate the "buy this to fix problem caused by buying this". At some point things (mods) should stop causing other issues. It seems the more we throw at these things the more they need.

Yeah I definitely agree with your last statement. I'm running into troubles myself with my HPOP not being able to supply enough oil to the injectors (ICP code).

Oh wow. I didn't know it was that bad for you & I can see how that's a problem. Mine usually only does it for a few seconds. I let off of the throttle, then get right back in it a little easier and it's gone.

Now, I know you can't hear it surge the stock airbox, and I can't even feel it with the 6637 installed, but how are you seeing it? Did the needle on the boost guage bounce when it was surging, with the 6637 installed? And, I assume that the needle no longer bounces with the stock air box? I'm just trying to see if the more restrictive airbox is really causing the surge to actually stop, or just that you can't hear it.

Yes you can see the needle on the boost gauge bouncing in relation to the surge. Actually starts just before you hear it. With the stock box, no surge seen, heard or felt. I can feel it due to loss of power. I know isurge can cause damage to the turbo but it just seems weird that there are no signs or symptoms w/ the stock box

So, what amount of weight are we talking before you will get the turbo to stall(stock)? If the WW is installed will that prevent this compressor stall(up to what amount of weight can be towed before the WW will stall?)

yes, looks like the price has gone up a little since the last time I bought a couple of them. Freight hurts a little if you only buy one. If you get more along with some fuel filters, price can't be beat.

Just pitch them. I went 9 months (about 9500 mi) and it was starting to look kinda gray so I changed it. Filterminder still had not moved though.
