Time to get a new computer. At this point do you go with 64-bit or 32-bit?

no, the 64 bit os is not a big diff over anyone with 32 systems because almost all software is still 32 bit. i have done both and for the time and trouble id reccomend the 32 bit for right now. go ahead and get an amd 64 bit processor and whatnot but just install regular xp pro and run with that till the new os comes out

I gotta second the emotion of sticking with 32-bit for now.

64-bit gets you NOTHING on your home desktop unless you plan on having more than 4GB of virtual memory (physical RAM + swap file).

And then, it only works for apps that have been re-written and compiled as 64-bit apps.

In the "real world" of 64-bit computing (not including Microsoft, of course), going from 32-bit to 64-bit has usually either slowed DOWN the applications/OS or stayed the same. Hardly, if ever, is 64-bit going to run faster than 32-bit and only if the application was doing cheesy 64-bit stuff on it's own.

So, unless you need access to more than 4 GIGAbytes of data, it's not a big deal.

And now, some MS-person is going to chime in about how GREAT 64-bit is

Actually my current computer will boot in Windows XP or Debian Sarge. I was thinking of getting a new computer with Windows and using the old one for linux.

Is there a big price difference between AMD 64 and AMD 32?

add one note, not all manufacturers offer 64 bit drivers for hardware out there.

cause an amd xp, 3000 is huge (for an xp) but a 3000 amd 64 is rather small for the newcastle or other cores. i remember a couple years ago when a 2000+ was 400$ and hard to come by

I just rebuild my computer partially after it was laid up for almost a year following a lightning strike. I went ahead and grabbed a 3.2Ghz P4 HT 64-bit and the motherboard to support it, just so that someday when the chance comes I'll be a little more ready. I stick with mainstream hardware, so I doubt 64-bit drivers will be issues.

Get the hardware, wait on the software. I went Intel because it was available, I usually do AMD stuff. Meh. Now I just need to upgrade my GeForce3 Ti, get a 19" LCD, 200GB SATA drive, and a DVD Burner. Man...it never ends...

I used to be a HUGE technophile, knew everything about computers and could quote prices for anything..I felt like such a newb cause I stopped payin attention to processors back when the Barton core came out..and when the GeForceFX series was the hottest thing just coming out. Came to find that the 6-series had come adn gone, and now into the 7-series. WOAH.

Question

So I'd be absolutely stupid to buy an AMD XP 3000 @ $225 when I can buy an AMD 64 3000 for $125...right? Also noticed that there is a 754 pin and a 939 pin AMD 64 3000. 754 pin is $125, 939 pin is $175. What is the difference here?
