Harrison (my ford F100) standed me at the beer store today. I think my alternator / charging system is about to bite-the-dust.
As you all know by now I am headed toward the 240 cu in motor to 460 boat anchor swap within the next 2 weeks .
What I be wondering was what kind of hopped up charging system I can upgrade the original 6 cyl system to after the engine swap.
The F100 is a custom - it ONLY has the alternator hanging on the engine. After the engine swap though, I need to put my 450 watt Dynamite kicker for my CB in the cab and a LOUD cd-stereo system (lots of juice will be used). Anybody ever done this kind of an upgrade?
You want power ? Try the Leece-Neville 325 amp alternator, altho it may dog the 460 out lol, how many amps does your cb thing draw and what audio amplifier do you plan on running ?? Im sure you could get by with a Ford 100 amp alt
Mark, It seems "harrison" could use a hi-amp alt like I use for my camper. It is a big housing motorcraft alt with a 160amp kit on it. It is all done internal! now lets see, 160amp x 12v = 1920 watts. will that be enough? I tell you what, you tell me about your CB stuff, (how do i make my CB ROCK) and I will tell you anything you need to know about your charging system! I will even tell you where to get the stuff in your area.

It doesn't appear like I have to do anything special to anything else under the hood except ~swap~ the alternator, eh? I think I'll opt for the 100 amp genuine Ford alternator. That will be plenty of juice, really. Nothing hot-rodded about the CB, except it has a VERY high wattage kicker on the side of it and a local CB shop on highway 41 did some special tweaking on its innards. My neighbors don't like me...when I key down on the CB, I cut off their TV broadcasts, but at least I can talk to people in Canton (about 35 miles away) late at night. Get good reports from truckers about the Cobra 29's clarity.
See you in the slow lane (that's me in the white truck),

what is a kicker, and what does it do for you? how do I get my CB to get out farther? thanks, Brent

A "Kicker" is a pre-amplfier that boosts the output of your CB. For instance my Cobra 29 puts out 12 watts, as limited by the FCC off the shelf. You can buy the amplifier (kicker that KICKS your output signal miles farther) at most truckstops through-out the United States. Even in your yellow pages under radio repair might be a cd repair shack. Anyway, the kickers are not well liked and are illegal to run, according to the fcc. For instance when I key down on my cb, it cuts into the tv reception of my neighbors a good 1/4 mile away, but I an really SEND-A-SIGNAL!! That's about all I know about them; mine cost $150.00 five years ago and is still going strong. I take my cb up to a local truck stop for "tweaking" once a year, as electronic component values can change through time....
Ok guys...this 100amp alternator....where do you find it? is it a direct replacement?
laptopgeek: did you try this yet? let me know what it set you back and where you got the alternator,,,i have a 200watt cd player in my 79 and am getting tired of dimm lights at night
When you mention the Ford 100 amp alternator, is that an upgrade over the normal alternator? Forgive my stupidity but I don't know how many amps a regular stock alternator puts out. I'm making plans for my truck restoration and the information would help me decide if it's something I'd be interested in doing. Thanks for anyone who can enligten me.
