What kind of engine and transmission is in this van? I have the vin #; can anybody point me to where I can go to positively identify the engine and transmission of this wrecked van? I'm buying the engine and transmission for Harrison, my F100.
F = 302 2bbl
G = 351 2bbl
H = 351 4bbl to 87
H = 351 EFI 88 up
N = 302 EFI
Y = 6 cyl
Transmission: if its 3 spd, its almost definitely C6, if its 4 spd early to mid 80's AOD, if its 4 spd late 80's (89 up?) could be E4OD.
Hope this helps.
1979 F150 Custom: nothing under the hood at all (again)
1987 F150 XLT Lariat: 88 351W EFI
75 351W: soon to have 91 heads, ?? cam, double roller timing chain, Edelbrock Performer intake & Holley carb and be put back in 79 F150
84 351W: waiting for ???
Chevy 454: waiting for a truck (Mazda?Nissan?)
Sorry, not sure what L code stands for. The ones I listed are the ones I memorized for looking at trucks on sales lots or wreckers. A Chiltons manual or an owners manual should be able to tell you what L is.

Hey, no problem. As long as it cranks up, rattles the windows, get 18+ miles per gallon and blows all the ch*vys off the road, I'll be as happy as a june-bug in a holler
According to the books I looked in, the "L" engine code in the VIN number stood for the 460 V8 in 1984 and 1987 (probably all years until 1987), then in 1988 the 460's code was changed to "G." What is the year of your E350?
Thanks for the informative reply. Gawd, I love these forums - they're so helpful.
The Econoline 350 is a 1986 model with 26,000 miles on it. The guy who sold it to me told me it has a 460 engine in it...just wanted to make sure. But thinking about it....somebody "could" have done an engine swap on the van. Never know till I get it delivered to my house this week-end. I imagine the engine will have some sort of code on it, to identify what it is. I wonder if the VIN number tells what transmission is in it?
A 1986 with only 26,000 miles on it? Something doesn't seem quite right about that. I think there is a tranny code on the door, but am not sure that leads to an answer. From looking at my owner's manual, it seems the AOD tranny will have a selector with something missing, kind of like OD,D,1 (I have heard of people with mustangs doing weird shifting techniques to lock it into second that ultimately destroy the tranny); my 1990 460 E350 motorhome has an E4OD and the selector goes OD,2,1, which seems to be missing D, but there is an electronic switch on the dash (buddies F150 E4OD has switch on selector lever) to cut out the OD thus making the OD selection into D. I use the switch a lot because this thing dosen't like to downshift unless you really stomp it and hold it stomped. I put a Banks Transcommand module in my E350 E4OD and now it shifts nice and firm.
