When you install a capacitive discharge ignition box (im looking at both the msd6a and the accel 300+) in a truck with a duraspark setup, does that replace the duraspark box? or does it just go between the box and the coil?
79super, I wouldn't even think about running the Accel unless they are paying you some serious $$ to take one. The MSDs are well thought of however. The unit should come with instructions as to how to wire it in, my guess would be that it somehow fits between the dura and the coil. My truck has an ignition from Jacobs, I removed the dura box and replaced it with a LX101 from standard motor products. It is supposed to be for chryslers, but I like the simplicity of a 5 wire box as opposed to my 11 wire dura. So my setup has a duraspark dizzy hooked to a LX101 hooked to the Jacobs CD/computer, then to the coil. All the wiring instructions came with my stuff, even how to substitute the LX101 for the dura box. I am very happy with mine. Don't forget to open the plugs up with the new system, mine are at 080. have you, or others youve heard of, had really bad experiences with the accel unit? ive read some good stuff about them and they seem like a decent all around package after weighing in price and claimed performance...
What is wrong with the Accel 300+? I am running one of these on my pulling truck and am very happy with it.I got better performance from it than a msd6.
79super, I suppose I have never forgiven Accel. I had some of their wires and coil on my 69 Torino in high school. The wires fell apart in less than a week, and the coil couldn't fire a 050 gap on the oil soaked plugs ( I needed valve stem seals in the worst way). I put on solid copper wires from Moroso and a Mallory coil, and never had anymore trouble, but my nieghbors TV did have a fuzzy screen when I started the car. I promised myself then no more Accel anything, that was in 1978. I purchased the Jacobs products after reading his book and learning more about ignition than I ever wanted to know. My trucks have all run well with his stuff since. Upgrading from points on the 71 made a big differance. DF
Hey dennis, thanks for the input. i really did think the accel 300+ looked like it was good and i think ill probably go ahead and get it before too long. you say it was better than the msd6a...have you run both on the same truck and noticed the difference? also, how much performance and economy would you guess it gave you over the stock ignition?
damn, neighbors tv fuzzy when you started the car...maybe i need solid core wires...i hate my neighbor...she called and asked me to tell my friend with "the loud engine" to take it easier when he left late at night....so that night(he was there when she called...65 mustang, 302 10:1 gt40 heads, roller cam, roller rockers, shelby tri y's, 2.5 inch flowmaster 2 chambers) he left my driveway completely sideways, bouncin off the rev limiter at bout 5500 rpm and i heard him from the time he left until he got bout a mile away...never heard from the neighbor again...hehe, but i am always lookin for a way to **** her off.
i know i was ramblin, but i would go with the msd if i were you, and if you plan on gettin on it hard at all id go with the 6al so you could have the rev limiter so if anything breaks your motor wont rev out of the stratosphere. good luck,
mike
