Does it make any difference if you put the filter in the cap and then screw it on or if you put the filter in the housing and THEN screw on the cap? My manual doesnt say, but a tech page from ford says to snap the filter into the cap, and then install, which is what i did. But there is a slit in the filter where it looks like it is supposed to seat. As i screwed it on, every turn had a hard spot in it until it got on a ways, then it was OK, which i assume was the filter seating.
Havent purged the air, need info so i can fix before it fills with fuel.
I have a 4X4 and I am unable to get the filter into the cap and re-install. I have to "baby" the HFCM filter in first and seat all the way in then screw the cap on. The filter does snap into the cap, but I am unable (with the room I have) to get the filter and cap (all in one) to slide up into the housing. Changed mine this afternoon and installed the new drain plug I bought several months back from my dealer.
Good as new and my truck started with just 1 or 2 extra rotations of the motor... have never cycled the starter on/off 3 times like some do.
O-rings just slide on and off and seat just fine in the last groove of the filter cap(s). In my haste, I did not suck out the fuel in the small engine mounted housing... just hope there wasn't anything floating in there?
Be sure to lube the o-ring real good or it might tear and then the truck will not run. Sucks air and leans out, no power. Personal experience here. I thought the diesel fuel that was present was enough lube, not true. Second time around I used Motor Oil and it went on with no problems. Valuable lesson! Note: I found the needed 36mm 1/2 drive socket at Sears for $6.99.
I have no idea why you are supposed to suck out hte fuel in the housing...i did it, but i dont know why.
To keep the dirt out of the fuel intake tube.
Sediment on the outside of the filter now mixed with the clean fuel when you pulled the filter out. Suck out the fuel present and hopefully any sediment goes with it. Leaving it in now mixes and will be sucked up into the injectors.
