Does it make any difference if you put the filter in the cap and then screw it on or if you put the filter in the housing and THEN screw on the cap? My manual doesnt say, but a tech page from ford says to snap the filter into the cap, and then install, which is what i did. But there is a slit in the filter where it looks like it is supposed to seat. As i screwed it on, every turn had a hard spot in it until it got on a ways, then it was OK, which i assume was the filter seating.
Havent purged the air, need info so i can fix before it fills with fuel.

What brand of fuel filter did you install? WIX has some "fitting issues" depending on your model year. Ford, Racor, International fuel filters (all made by Racor) fit all model years. WIX fuel filters now have two different part numbers... one for 2003-2004 and one for 2005-2006. There was an older thread about this.
I noticed that no one else replied to your thread... so was just curious on what brand of fuel filter you installed?
After you change both fuel filters. To purge air just turn on the key wait 30 seconds. Turn key off. wait a few minutes. Do this 3 times and air is purged by fuel pump. Never had a starting problem doing this

I talked to a lady at Filter1 who confirmed that I had the right kit for my 04..The filter for the HFCM has a notch on it, like you mentioned...I just snapped the filter into the cap, and screwed it on, and it seems to be okay..I did not feel any clicking, or resistance due to that notch at all though. I thought it kind of weird though, and wondered if I should have put the filter in first, (to try to seat the notch) then put the cap on, but it seemed to go on okay with the filter snapped into the cap first. No leaks, and it is running fine, BUT I did think that the previous o-ring went INSIDE of the HFCM cylinder and now it is visible...Just squeezed between the end of the cylinder and the cap. Is this how it should be, or should the o-ring not be visible at all? I can't remember how it was when I unscrewed the cap (for my first time doing this)... Any input please? Also, does anyone know if I just got lucky, and next time, should I put the filter in first, to line up the notch, THEN put the cap on, and tighten? Thanks...
I put mine in the cap. Just FYI, this is what FORD/INTERNATIONAL SAY TO DO. Thats why the notches are there. You can screw it on, and when you get far enough it, they lock and hold the filter inplace while you tighten the cap down. You can put the filter in first i guess, and hope the cap snaps into it when you screw it down. Probably doesnt matter which way you do it. I have never had leaks or problems. The o-ring on the cap should seat in a groove, so that when you tighten the cap, it actually goes INTO the housing such that it seals on the inside diameter of the housing. Can probably back out the cap a few turns and seat it properly. If any dirt dislodges, you still have a second filter to go through before the injectors.

100% correct... I snap the filter into the cap since this is what you must do for the oil filter to seat properly... so I do it for the fuel filter as well.
Okay, I'm concerned now, cause it does not look like there is ANY way that the new o-ring on the cap for the HFCM filter can fit INSIDE of the cylinder. It is pretty much the same diameter as the outside of the cylinder itself...Can anyone else confirm that the o-ring should be going INSIDE of the cylinder. Mine does not look like it will fit inside at all...
PM me your email. I have a .pdf copy of the install directions from Ford with color pics. Its all photograph illustrated. I think it has a photo of the cap and o-ring. I can't post it here because i cant get my ftp to load it to my website for some reason.
Now that i look at the PDF, the pic isnt high enough quality to see where the o-ring is supposed to go. I can scan the original at home and get a good pic if you like, or maybe someone else has it.
The o-ring sits in a GROOVE in the cap.

HEY!! I'm an idiot!!! Guess what I did er, DIDN'T do...
Remove the old o-ring!! Yeah..
If it makes a difference, I WAS talking to a cutie that was walking by and stopped to compliment my truck- and hang out to watch me "work on my truck", as she put it....
So, is a DOUBLE seal better than a single seal?
I swear, that 2nd o-ring was squished in there perfectly!
But I'm sure this kinda keeps the fuel filter from seating/ locking all the way in, so I took the old ring out, seated the new one, and the cap went all the way in- with the o-ring inside..
Thanks for your feedback that this wasn't right guys... I'm good to go now..
Good thing that cutie didn't see me under my truck again today, doin the same dang thing...
