I have a 96 and got a filter for a 96 but it is not the correct one for the set up on my truck now. the cap does not have the slots in the top for laying the screw driver or bar into to take it off. Looks like a oil filter wrench is needed. The new filter diameter is 3 5/8" and the original one is 3 1/4" and the cap has a long rod that needs to go through the filter, but it needs to be same opening as the bottom of the filter.
Did someone replace the orignal with maybe a 99 version? Also the rubber gasket is rectangle in profile, not wedge shaped? What filter do I need?
i would just go back to the parts store and show them what you have from your truck, they should be able to match it up. after that find out what it fits and write it down and stick in your glove box for later.
Sounds like they gave you the wrong filter, hard to tell from this side of the screen. Some of the new filters have a cap attached, some dont. SAVE your original cap in case you want to go back to the original design filters like I did. Some replacements have a flat gasket instead of the wedge shape seal. Sometimes the flat gaskets works, sometimes it leaks. I couldnt keep the lflat gaskets sealed up on mine so i went back to a Motorcraft filter and gasket, problems solved.
Super Duty fuel filters are completely different than the OBS, not even close to fitting the same.
There should not be any rod going through the filter either. Go back to who gave you that one and try again.
