I have a question for the offroad people..
I have a 94 f250 4x4 .. Where in the world can I mount a tow hook or D-ring or something up front so when I get stuck next time I don't have to worry about my father-in-law ripping my bumper off with the back-hoe..
Thanks
-Kansas
It's hard to find an accessible mounting location on that body style of truck. If you have the money, I would get a frame hitch for the front of the truck and then get a reciever with a D-ring or a hook. I guess you could also cut some holes in the bumper and mount some hooks to the frame so that the ends poke through the holes. A bumper from a diesel truck with the extra openings might work too.
Once the bumper is ripped off its not really an issue now is it?? Seriously, though, the idea of cutting a hole in the bumper and mounting a long hook through to the frame worked really well on my dad's Bronco. Kinda weakens the bumper, but they are pretty flimsy anyway!!
In a bad stuck you do not want to pull off just one frame rail. At the very least you bend the flange the tow hook is mounted to. Putting a 10K receiver on the front with a clevis/lunette is the best way, as mentioned. What I do if using a 2" strap is put the strap inside the receiver and attach it using the pin. That way I do not have to worry about a part breaking and going airborne if the pull is straight.
If you want cheap, run 3" x 3/16 (min) channel from one frame rail to the other INSIDE the frame. Use (4) 1/2" grade 8 bolts (2 each side) to mount it. Mount it U side up. Attach a tow hook with keeper clip to this or chain. Should be good enough for most pulls and if it breaks (bolt shear unlikely) it stays inside the frame instead of flying out.
I have seen guys just take a reciever hitch and mount it up on the front, you might have to do a little modification to it (Gee imagine that modifying parts to fit what a concept) but then you have a really strong point to hook too.
yeah the front receiver is what i like, then you can build or buy a basket for a winch to sit in that has a receiver hookup on it....then you can put your winch in front or back, whichever you need.....
