Woooohoooooo!!!!!
I'm at about 250 miles now and have come to a steady 9.8 mpg no matter how I drive it. I'm going to let it run down to 1/4 tank or so and fill it up with 87 next week. I've been keeping the speed down under 70 (mostly around 40), and not going any steady speed for long. But I know I suprised a guy in a Focus SVT when he couldnt pull away from me at a stop light today! Also sank it in enough snow/mud today to stop it in 2wd, and spin a bit in 4wd while checking out a "proposed" new road at our camping area.
I LOVE THIS TRUCK! It does anything and everything... Just so long as you dont want to do it to far from a gas station.
I've had at least two strangers walk up and compliment on the truck each day since I picked it up, so I must not be the only one that was stopped in my tracks when I saw how great the Super Duty's look black. As soon as I get to 3,000 miles I'm putting synthetic fluids in the whole drive line except the engine. I'm going to take it to the dealer and let them change the engine oil every 3K (I know many say you can go longer between changes, but hey, its cheap insurance on a $45K truck!)
What's with having THREE people want to race in only three days in this thing!?! There was a chevy 1500 getting on the highway with me I didnt mention. I let that one go unchallenged... What was he thinking?!?
I figure the synthetic fluid, and break in will get me to at least an even 10 mpg, which was my goal before I even bought the truck. So long at its double digits I'm happy! The V10 is just WAY to much fun to drive around babying it! NO WAY! I can only think the guys swearing by their diesels have never even sat in a V10 or Ford would never sell another diesel again! NOW I FINALLY UNDERSTAND why you can NEVER find a V10 on a dealer lot!!!
Ran into a guy bragging up a storm about his brand new Duramax standard cab stripped down model getting 15 mpg... That STINKS in my opinion! At least in putt, putting along in my Cummins I got 18 mpg in a loaded dually!
I never get tired of walking up to my truck and I still often turn around and sneak a peak while I am walking away from her.
mine was brought home today from the body shop for me. and the girl driving it asked if she could drive it a few days. hmmmm" in my mind i'm going what would that get me? just a little plus sized all in the correct spots" . yna i don't think so but man does it look great all detailed out .
how do like those 4:30's man. that gear and really the best for the truck all around.
Ford Trucks for Ford Truck Enthusiasts
Yes them 4.30:1 gears really make the go pedal sensitive to a little torque! BSEG for sure!
No need to get all geared up (pun intended) for full synthetic lubes on the new rig. Most every lubricant in it is already synthetic or in the case of the motor semi synth
The 5R110 works best with the factory lube unlike the 4R100 that works best with the aftermarket synthetic Mercon type lubes. Real reason is the 5R110 has a fully pressurized solenoid system and the valving and springs are very sensitive to changes in warmed up fluid viscosity. Some of the synthetics are "lighter" when hot and some slightly "heavier". Stick with the Ford stuff in that trans is my opinion.
My real point is there is no bang for the buck by using the expensive stuff for POWER...... EXTENDED change intervals is a completely different reason to use the expensive stuff. But during the 36Month 36,000 mile warranty I recommend you strictly use Ford stuff or at least lubes that are properly rated and follow the 3000 or 5000 service schedule.
93 Octane is a pure waste of your hard earned cash and will not run any better then the good quality 87 octane stuff. There is potential that the 93 Octane gas will not completely burn in the 9.2:1 compression ratio motor and wash the cylinder walls, carbon up the O2 sensors (all 4 of them), and pollute the catalytic converter. Ford is on the hook to warranty the Cat for longer then the 3/36. If you puke them (there are two) early they will do a tear down analysis and charge you the $1500 for a new set! Yes Virginia the Ford Factory Cats are very expensive !
Climb under that new truck and get very acquainted with the reason they could up the HP and Torque so much.
As to the motor break in...... some one above made a comment about Ring Blow BY for 5 to 10K miles. Naw, I doubt it....the rings are seated real quickly in the first 70-350 miles....
There is a theory that Ford has the PCM programed to not give max torque until the 5 to 7 thousand mile mark... I am not sure on that, and can find ZERO info on such a program in the Ford OBD II strategy and diagnostic info. I do know that around 3000-5000 theses motors seems to gain some power and again around 9000-12,000 when she maxes out the MPG averages. (I have owned and kept records on ten of the V10 powered trucks since 2000). ( OK, only one is the 3v V10)(grin...my favorite BSEG machine!!)
as to the rears the factory ford fill is a full syntec load and ford refills with it.
trans yes use the mercron sp.unless you have a trans like mine that is so moded it must have m5 in it.
Stopped at the gas station today when I got down just under 1/4 tank. Filled her up with 87 octane and am now getting 13.2 mpg!
NOPE! Wasnt the gas! While the pump was running I was just walking around looking at the truck and saw that the dealer had left the hubs in the "lock" position! I turned both hubs to "Auto", topped off the tank and WHALA! 13.2 MPG!
One of the guys at work has TWO powerstrokes (One is an expedition), he tells me that he did ONCE get 16 mpg. But has never seen that again. He's averageing 15 at best.
I just got in an original Ford parts "Gold / Deluxe" remote start, alarm, remote entry system from ebay (one of the guys on this site recommended it). If anyone is interested in it, it IS original Ford parts, sealed in the factory box's, and for $100 bucks! Ford wants $375 for the exact same part number! There are more of them still for sale on ebay, Looking at the goodies inside I DONT recommend this if your afraid of wireing! Looks like about 50 wires that will need terminated in there!!!
Be very careful on installing the Gold alarm remote start. This is a serious install and has the potential to screw with factory computers if not done correctly.
Sorry guys I know I am a stick in the mud a lot but the warranty being voided is a expensive screw up.
I am not a fan of undocumented excess stock or other "Fire sale" items off E-bay.... saving $200hundred dollars and voiding a warranty on a $40K+ truck should be thought about very long. I assure you that the seller of the $100 buck Gold alarm will not stand behind the product....ever! (BTDT) Been There, Done That
