One of the guys at work has a 99 F150 with the 5.4 in it. He was looking at getting a K&N FIPK for like $229.99 and i told him that he'd probably be better off getting a diablo delta chip for $189.99 or however much they are now. What do you all think. I personally have never had that great of results with putting on aftermarket air filters, etc. I did notice a substatial gain with the chip in my ranger though. Is this the same for the F150? Or do you get more power from a FIPK than a diablo delta? What is more cost effective even considering you have to run premium with the chip? What gives you the most HP per dollar?
All things considered....if you put the chip in, it will definitely give you more bang for the buck but....if you increase the output of the motor it will need more air....and then when it gets more air it will need to be able to get rid of that so the exhaust should be ungraded too....it is a never ending quest...so if it were me and I was on a budget I would do the chip, or better yet, spend the extra few dollars and buy the programmer, then you can make changes as you move up with the other add-ons.
I personally think most cold air kits are HYPE...I put my stock intake back on, and go figure it runs better than ever and mileage improved! Plus your stock intake keeps more "junk" from the air out of your motor! If your only wanting to spend a few $100s or so...go with a programmer or chip. But dont expect day and night difference...usually you wont notice much power gains unless your running higher RPMs!
I have a 97 with the 5.4. I installed the K&N kit you are talking about. It did give a noticeable increase in power but it performs better on cooler days because the kit draws air (warm air) from under the hood rather than the stock set up which draws air from outside the engine bay. I also noticed a slight mileage improvement. After the intake kit I also put on a throttle body spacer (makes a whistling noise and not much power or fuel improvement) and Gibson Super Truck exhaust (the exhaust is great). Overall I like the K&N kit and exhaust but the spacer isn't that great. I do plan on a chip tuner in the future.
K&N=HYPE MASTER.....had one and didn't make a difference at all except for the new noise from the air comming through the filter......The Programer is much better because you can use it as you upgrade down the road....much better investment....after that i'd say exhaust....just cause it sounds cool....may get a couple ponies but not much
Thanks gui88ford...Im glad someone else out there also realizes that all these intakes/cold air kits etc...are mostly HYPE and a waste of money! haha..
Yeah, i agree with you there. I had one on my ranger and thats why i told the guy to opt for the chip. The ranger didnt do anything. So i put the stock intake back on the ranger and used the leftover parts on my F150 intake when i converted to mass air.
Yah...my mileage increased when I put my stock intake back on my 02 FX4. Funny how they claim great mileage increase and like 15 extra horse...yeah right, maybee if your motor is full throttle running 7000 RPMs you might have a few extra ponies. Plus its not a cold air intake...they are hot air intakes due to the setup, maybe besides the VOLANT system. Just my opinion...not worth it!
