What kind of gain can I expect to see by replacing my muffler with a straight pipe on my 7.3PSD Excursion? How loud will it be? I've done the kwik intake system and I'm thrilled to death with that, just looking for back-end breathing options. Thanks in advance for any advise.
honestly,
with a full turbo back for $400 shipped to your door you really can't beat bang for your buck there. A cool diesel is a happy diesel and the better the flow, the lower the EGT so as far as wear and tear go, the bigger the better. Some swear by 5" exhausts, but I have heard you lose some power so I'm going to stick to the 4" from MBRP.
I replaced my stock muffler with a walker BTM (pictures in the link in my sig) it is a pass through muffler so it does help. With the filter and a BTM you will notice a little extra but its mainly to help out with other mod's, like a chip or tuner. It will lower the EGT's a little also. Sound is really good, deeper at idle and it doesnt have as much flutter as a straight pipe and lets the turbo whistle. It gives about 80% of what a full 4inch turbo back would give in power and EGT drop from what I have read. The best part is the price, www.Blackclouddiesel.com has it $54 shipped.
I agree with what bigdaddytank said. I replaced my stock muffler with the Walker about 8 months ago. Not a noticeable difference in the cab over the stock muffler, which is good, but a noticeable difference outside, which is even better. I think with a staight pipe on an X, your going to get to much drone in the cabin to the point of it being annoying, especially on long trips. The Walker is worth every penny IMHO.
I replaced my stock muffler with Walker BTM a while back. It improved flow considerably and sounds good too. I am expecting delivery of my new 4" MBRP exhaust this week. I would suggest, if you can scrape together the money, getting a 4". I wish I would have to begin with. I paid about $420 for 4" aluminized exhaust with 5" SS tip delivered. I wasted $120 or so on the BTM (paid to have it installed), that was a couple of months ago.

Good point. If you can do the BTM yourself like I did, bang for the buck it is really good. Lots of guys don't weld.
If you can do the 4" yourself and not the BTM, there you go.
Either is way better than stock. Bang for the buck BTM, the best performance 4". You decide. If you plan on running a high HP tune, you need all the flow possible.

You could get the clamps along with the BTM and clamp it on instead of welding. That should be an easy install. If you wanto to do the entire system yourself, get some help. Getting the old one out is no problem, Getting the new system in can be difficult with one person. Some brewskies wouldn't hurt either.
I removed my muffler about 6 months ago and i like it..... feels like there is a lot more power and a lot more to go....... not really loud as people say until the idle kicks up when its cold then it just screams. i also have a high flow air filter other than that its stock

I think you have to relocate a hanger for BTM installation, that is why you need a welder.

Correct. You need to chop the hanger up and attach two pieces on the rear pipe. There's also not enough of the tailpipe left to clamp into the new muffler. It can be done, but it won't have enough grip to resist twisting and will contact the rearQP or drag the ground, or just pop out of the muffler.
