I have been reading a number of posts here that refer to "muffler delete" but don't really provide much detail. Is there anyone here that can provide more info on what exactly needs to be done other than the obvious i.e. removing the muffler.
Are there companies out there that sell the required parts etc, as I assume I need at least a section of straight pipe to fill in the gap left after removing the muffler.
My truck is a fairly stock 2000 F250 PSD 7.3 with 120,000 miles on it.

Reason: Typos
I just took mine to the local exhaust shop and had them cut out the muffler and weld in a piece of 4in pipe they had laying around. I think they charged my $40 total for parts and labor.
I did the same thing. Took it to a local shop, $40, section of 4 in. pipe welded in.Side note, my good friend and I both have similar trucks only mine is a 2002 and his is a 2001. We were neck and neck before I got the delete done... afterwards I would walk away pretty hard. Made a huge difference. Also got about half mile per gallon better mileage. Best $40 so far...
Like I said, that was just something I heard. When I bought my truck (used) it already had a 4in system on it with out a cat, so Iv never been really sure myself
I have a early 99 w/ a cat. should i remove this? I can only assume that it will help with egt, hp, etc.....
This muffler delete...how much louder over stock is it? I am looking for an exhaust as well, but want one as quiet as stock or not very much louder at all. I am on the road quite a bit and dont want to listen to any exhaust notes in the cab. Thanks for the recommendations!!!!

A muffler delete will be much louder than stock, but not overly loud, if that makes sense.
Best thing to stay sorta close to stock sound would be a Walker BTM (big truck muffler). It'll let it breathe better but without being as loud as a straight-piped setup.
I guess that was pretty obvious as you're removing the muffler, lol.
When your windows are up, you won't notice much if any difference if you have a straight pipe vs. stock. Windows down is another story.
Removing the cat can only help (lower EGTs and somewhat quicker turbo spoolup), but may want to check on your local testing/inspections, if you have anything like that. A straight pipe with no muffler, cat, etc. is best as far as EGTs go.
The BTM is just a muffler (Big Truck Muffler). I believe www.puredieselpower.com carries them. I have no idea which is louder... probably pretty close in loudness, as the BTM is a free-flowing muffler just like the MBRP muffler.
Basically, if you are wanting to keep things quiet overall, you'll either want a BTM for your stock exhaust, or a full 4" system with muffler. Magnaflow systems are generally quieter or more mellow than an MBRP system if you want to go with a full turboback system.
It'll also be quieter with the cat than without. But again, "quietness" is pretty relative or objective. I don't think straight pipes on our trucks are very loud, personally... others might think they're obnoxious. If you've got the windows up, I don't think you'll notice much difference.
My main question is do you have a stock exhaust system? If that is the case you will need to find some 3.5" pipe to install in it's place. My suggestion is to go with a full 4" exhaust with or without the muffler. I have a 4" exhaust on mine and was complete with a Dynomax muffler. I gave the guy at the muffler shop in town a 1/5th of Clown Oil (Crown Royal) and got a piece of 4" straight pipe installed. I used to work at a Lincoln Mercury dealer and had sent him lots of exhaust work and even a few Powerstrokes for 4" exhaust. It isn't much louder than the Dynomax muffler in the cab but I love it when people roll their windows up because my truck is too loud!! As for as the cat goes I would definitly remove it. It won't set a check engine light because these trucks don't have O2 sensors in the exhaust so the second sensor (also known as a cat monitor) doesn't exist for the computer has no was of monitoring it.
My understanding is that only the Powerstrokes trucks made in Mexico had catalytic convertors. But that is just something I heard from one of the Techs I used to work with.
If you go with a full exhaust system it will be louder but not much louder inside the cab. You will be able to hear it, especially when loaded or towing, but for me I like this. I have always like hearing the engine. Everyone's "loudness" scale is different. The only thing I can suggest is try and find someone around your town with exhaust on it and listen to it driving and see what you think. Just keep in mind you are hearing what it sounds like outside, not 6 to 8 feet in front of the tailpipe.
