hey, i was wondering the same thing, i got a 78 f250 4x4 and would like to put headers on it but don't know what to truck to buy them for, i know custom made headers will work, but i don't have that much money
LAST EDITED ON 27-Jun-01 AT 06:52 AM (EST)[p]Terry, Look at headers for a 302, if you find a listing for your truck, go to a supplier pull a pair out of the box and compare the 351 to 302. They should be very simular, if not exactly alike.
IMHO Don't waste your money on headers, a good set of properly specked duals will work fine, give your exhaust a good flow, and you can avoid the pitfalls of headers. They are for lookers and braggers, but engines working in the 2-3000 rpm can't really use the plumbing headers offer. Engines working over 4000 rpms is another thing.

Be careful w/ that idea of using 302 headers on the 351W. The heads are the same, but.....
The deck height of a 351W puts the heads an inch higher and an inch wider than a 302 and that might make a clearance difference. I think you have to gamble some because you will find no application listed (I've looked) I'd maybe also consider whether 351W headers for Mustang application might work? I know in a mustang the issue is that the heads are closer to shock towers, so one pipe is rerouted up and over the shock tower. I you could get a shop to indulge you to test fit (goodluck) that's what I'd be doing. Another consideration besides using stock iron manifolds, is the 90's solutions. There are alot of shorty headers made for the late model trucks. The 5.0L and 5.8L trucks have same heads on them. Most are coated very nicely too. If you went that way, you could have exhaust shop make some pipes to connect up. You probably would have to deal w/ plugging O2 sensor bung, or... put an O2 sensor in... I've seen aftermarket gauges that are suppose to judge exhaust for ideal fuel mix ratio using an O2 sensor like a modern EFI computer does.
HERE'S A GOODIN'. I HAD A 79 MUSTANG LX 5.0. THE STICKER ON THE
FAN SHROUD SAID 4.9 LITER. A 302(?). MY 93 F-150 SAYS 5.0 LITER.
A 302(?). MY 80 CAPRICE SAID 5.0 LITERS. A 305. MY 84 CAMARO SAID
5.0 LITER. A 305. THINK FORD OVER-MEASURES A LITTLE?
BBT, I wasn't suggesting using 302 headers, but since Ford never installed a 351W in that series truck, there is not a header app. for our trucks. Finding a 302 app and then pulling a 351w out of the box to look for a match would give you an idea weather it would work or not.
The W has a better manifold that the FE so I say forget headers.
