In most states it is illegal to obscure the plate in any way. It is also in most states a fix it ticket. He is pulled over for a valid reason. The cop is aware that it is a fix it ticket wheich means you walk down to the court house prove you fixed it and the ticket is torn up. That is why there are not many tickets like this given out.

In this case when you look at the time of night it does give the cop a chance at getting a drunk too. Not long ago I got pulled over by the local cops for having a temp tag in the front window instead of the back. It was 2:30 in the morning. I really think he just wanted a good look at the vette.

In the end if you are following the law you will not be pulled over in most cases unless a car that matches your discription has been used in a crime. This talk about mythical rights only exist for people who do not violate the law. As soon as you violate the laws your rights start to diminish. If you are not happy with some of the laws on the books then work to change them.

I still stand behind my reason, that you shouldn't be pulled over for no reason, and I agree with wolfman01 completly on this one.

The OP admitted that they were speeding. Last time I checked, speeding is a real reason to pull somebody over.

well I am going to add to this I haven't read all of the posts yet, but I had to go through a "safety check" the other day (I drive a semi) they were stopping every bodies lic and misc and calling it a safety check, what they were actually doing is checking to see if they could snag an illegal or wanted driver. Sounds good doesn't isn't it? I mean they weren't going after drunks, although if you found one good, but it was 8am in the morning, and they had cones setup on the road with 10 officers stopping every vehicle for this safety check, and I mean every vehicle, I also got pulled to the side to do a full inspection on the truck which at the time was only 1 week old nad the trailer was 1 month old. But they might have caught a person that was wanted for some crime somewhere so all is good right? Yeah I believe they did the same thing in Russia with check points to check your travel papers so explain why when people made such a fuss about that bieng a violation of basic human liberties in a communist country and that was why we should be against places that are communist is it ok here because we call it a safety check. Tell me what the difference between checking travel papers, and checking my DL is.
BTW they stopped something like 45,000 people and managed to find 3 people with suspended drivers lic, and a couple with warrents, well guess what maybe going to the place listed on the lic and picked them up in hte first place would have been a good idea oh wait that probably violates some stupid law, you know hte one that says cops can't actually have to work to do thier job not when they can stop 45,000 people and bother them instead at the cost of 1.8 million dollars of tax payer money.
Also I watched them let a guy go through after checking his lic with no tail lights, bald tires and an exhaust system hanging down and dragging the ground while I had to sit thier for 45 minutes without getting paid so they could do a "safety check, travel paper check" that was definatly a good deal eh comrade.

But in reality, it doesn't take a beer to distract most drivers. That's what cell phones, CD players, sattellite radios, CB's, newspapers, laptops, make-up, briefcases, fast food, long hours at work with little sleep, and those 3 kids in the back are for.
There has to be a line. I think .08 is reasonable. But the "Zero Tolerance" push is too much. Has anyone else read the study proving that driving tired is just as, if not more, dangerous than driving after several drinks. What's next? Am I going to have to prove the last time I slept, or be prohibited from driving home after my 12 hour night shifts. You laugh, and the government hears that laugh and pushes the line a little farther.

On to the counter-point..
As another reply here claimed, "I can drink a 6 pack and drive..." Sure, so can any other moron, myself included. The ability to sucessfully complete the task at hand doesn't make it a good idea, or safe, and certainly doesn't mean you weren't impaired. I could drink more than I dare admit here for fear of being called a liar, and still stumble to my truck and drive it where ever you asked, that doesn't mean I SHOULD. And before anyone jumps me for that, I've been there, payed the lawyer, and learned my lesson. I was one of the bozos that SHOULD have been stopped, and was WELL beyond the legal limit. 5 Years later, no way would I do it again.

One last thing I have to point out, and I can't think of a better way to word it. I know I'm going to get ripped to shreds for it.

This "every single life should be protected at the cost of every available liberty" attitude some here (and everywhere) have. That's a nice, idealistic way to think, but it just doesn't work in the real world. People die. Not always of old age. I could choke on a bumblebee and die on the way home tomorrow. It happens. This wholehearted willingness to give up every and any freedom to save "just one life" is not realistic. For that "one life" you save, mother nature will wipe out dozens on a whim. If not, that one life is going to cease eventually anyway. Sorry, it's morbid, but it's realistic, and that's the way it works. The sooner folks realize this, the sooner we as citizens might figure out how to strike a reasonable balance in their government and their entire lives of excess.

I'll stop now, before I pop a fuse.

EDIT: Man, what a time killer this thread turned out to be, it's going for midnight already... Glad I'm on the clock.
