glow plug problem

glow plug problem
I was just changing my glow plugs, knowing that several are not working properly and deciding to do all at once instead of coming back again soon. It's the second time replacing them in 10 years, so that's not too bad. The problem is that on the front cylinder, drivers side, everything came out just fine except the end of the glow plug is gone. Nothing was any different about this plug from the others, just the end gone. I didn't hear anything drop, and it isn't laying on top anywhere. I don't know if it dropped off when I started unscrewing the plug, or if it has been gone for some time. They are Autolite plugs. The replacements are Motorcraft. I'm afraid to start the engine. Any ideas or suggestions?

What does the end of the broken plug look like? If it looks like a clean break it just happened. If it's all black like the rest of the plugs it's been gone for a while.

I didn't think to look at the end, too much in shock to think rationally. The whole tip is gone, the barrel is really blackened on the outside, and is black and charred up inside the barrel. This looks like it has been gone for a while. I think I'll just put in the new plug and fire her up.
